GENUINE Christopher Saxton Map Northumberland 16th 17th Century £1 NR
100% Genuine 17th century edition of the first map of Northumberland originally published by Christopher Saxton in 1579. The original plate updated and decorated. Includes Berwick. Newcastle and Hadrian's Wall. Philip Lea bought the set of Saxton printing plates in the 1680s he improved and embellished them with coats of arms and other features. The map detail is essentially Saxton's. But there are additions of town plans of Newcastle and Berwick-on-Tweed and some roads. This has wide margins and the whole sheet measures 21 x 17 inches. A real bargain. The Philip Lea edition of Saxton maps sell for thousands. THIS MAP IS NOT REPAIRED OR DAMAGED. I notice that the left and bottom margin line is missing, this is a printing error. An superbly hand-coloured. Copper-engraved map of the county of Monmouthshire Monumethensis Comitatus. Quem olim Incoluerunt Silures engraved by William Hole from Saxton’s survey and published in 1637. This map of the county is from the second English edition of Camden’s'Britannia' Translated by Philémon Holland and is decorated with a compass rose, embellished title cartouche and scale of distance. There is a platemark number 37 in the bottom left corner of the sheet. The map area measures approx 335mm x 275mm with margins beyond, blank verso. The overall condition is excellent with a slightly ragged left edge to the sheet and several small pieces of mounting tape on the reverse of the top edge of the sheet(see photograph) Overall a stunning example; offers considered. In remarkably good condition. Showing no defects or stains; the only thing to note is that the top margin is thin, although the plate mark is still visible. The last owner has paid to have a neat mount and backboard. Which will be included unless not wanted. The map is attached only by two paper hinges at top and is not pasted down. the image area measures 12 inches by 11. Plus the margins and mount. With hand colouring to the work. Making an attractive early Map of the County. The paper is beautiful mellow hand made laid paper and the condition is fine. Guaranteed to be as described and not any kind of repro of full refund.

Antique Saxton& Speed Map of Norfolk. Pub. Sudberg& Humble c.1611 John Speed's maps of the English and Welsh counties are amongst the most decorative of early. British cartographic work, and are eagerly sought after today. They were first published in 1611 in The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, designed as a companion volume to Speed's History of Great Britaine. The maps were based on the earlier surveys of Saxton, Norden and a few others, with engraving contracted to Jodocus Hondius whose signature appears on 33 of the maps. Speed's greatest innovation was the inclusion of inset plans of major towns and cities. Although some were copied from earlier work, for many towns this was first plan ever published. Speed's county atlas was re-issued a number of times for a period of around 160 years, with new publishers ... moremaking various small changes and updates to the maps over time. This example bears the imprint of Sudbury and Humble, dating it to the earliest editions of 1611 or 1614. Plate measures approximately. 51 cm x 37 cm The map is rather frail and has been attached to a backboard at some point. However. It appears to have been attached with a thick layer of glue which I suspect is responsible for the discolouring showing through to the front of the image. The paper also has slight damage in places but the item is complete. Purchased at an antiques auction. The map was presented in a rather battered and weak frame, see photo 9. I have therefore decided to remove and sell unframed. Please also note that I do not profess to be an expert in cartography and any advice regarding any inaccuracies in my description would be gratefully received. Very fast delivery. But most sttractive, giving a detailed picture of the Country at the start of the 17th century. An original antique map of DERBYSHIRE( Derby shire Described by C Saxton Corrected and Amended with many Additons by P Lea) by Christopher Saxton and Philip Lea. Published in 1693. The map is based on Saxton's original plate of Derbyshire(1576) but was extensively re-worked by Lea. Compared to the original Saxton map. This edition has an inset plan of Derby, roads, coats-of-arms etc. There are also vignettes of local curiosities/features- the Tiding Well, the Cold Spring at Buxton and the Devil's Arse! Cardigan comitatus pars olim dimetarum’ From the 1610 edition of Camden's Britannia. This edition is the second state. The title is in an elaborate cartouche top left with compass rose beneath it. Scale of distance bottom right. Watermarked paper. This series of maps were the first in which each county was deliniated on a separate sheet. They were prepared by William Kip and William Hole and were mainly based on those of Christopher Saxton and Norden. The first issue of these maps was in 1607 with Latin text on the back of the maps and as the paper on which they are printed is rather thin, the lettering sometimes shows through on to the front of the map. In the subsequent two editions of 1610 and 1637 the maps had no text on the back and plate numbers were added to many maps for the 1637 edition. DUNELMENSIS EPISCOPATUS SAXTON KIP 1607-37 DURHAM. Size 370mm x 312mm. The map has been attractively hand coloured. There was a pencilled date on the back of the frame card of 1609. But I am no expert and don't know how to date maps. I inherited the map from an uncle who collected old maps and I believe knew what he was buying. Please contact me for further clarification. I notice that there is another seller with the same map on ebay. The hand colouring is different but all else looks the same to me.

Optimago hand cut their puzzles with the traditional method of scroll saw cutting. London based Optimago was in business from 1979 through 2005. Condition: Box has minor wear including a couple of minor dents. Puzzle pieces appear new. Appears to never have been made. It is unknown if there are any missing pieces or not.
