One corner was dog-eared and along one side the paper was mis-folded. The map is clean and unmarked. The binding is pretty nice. The spine is rubbed through in one small spot and in one ¾” long spot. It may be military but not stamped US. Also a german made Hoffritz double sided compass with a distance measurer for a map on the flip side that converts centimeters run on a map to kilometers on land. The hands on the compass side are rusty but functional. The little measuring wheel is brass. Overall a very nice map in great condition that would frame up nicely, printed on heavy paper with the copper plate marks embossed around the margins and blank on the reverse. Published by the National Geographic Society, and lithographed by A. Hoen& Company, Baltimore. The map was issued in the June 1937 National Geographic Magazine. One month after the coronation of Britain's King George VI, father of Elizabeth II. The image below gives a closer look at the title cartouche, which includes a portrait of King George VI: This map covers the Kingdom of Great Britain, including England, Scotland, and Wales, along with Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State. A stunning original map entitled"The Countie of Radnor Described" by England's most famous mapmaker John Speed(see below) This is one of Speed's most decorative maps embellished with a town plan of Radnor(top left) The coat of arms of Great Britain(top right) a decorative compass rose and scale of miles(bottom right) and the feathers of the Prince of Wales(centre top) On the reverse is a description of the County and a list of all the Hundreds Exceptionally good condition with vertical fold as issued and mild creasing but no tears(see scan) Trimmed close to the top border as issued. The map is uncolored which was common at the time because the hand colored editions were considerably more expensive. The map was originally published in Speed's"Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" Is dated 1610(bottom left) ... moreand was sold by John Sudbury& George Humbell. However the maps were widely admired and the plates were passed through the hands of several publishers so that the actual date of printing is difficult to determine- see comprehensive explanation below Overall size 22 x 15.5 inches. The maps themselves. And the margins, are very clean. There are no tears, stains, discolorations or soiling whatsoever. The atlas from which these maps were removed did NOT spend its life at a public library. It was part ... moreof a private collection and was treated very well. Remarks The publication of the Times Survey Atlas in 1922 was the culmination of six years of painstaking work and. With the combination of political and the physical colour range from dark green to dark brown to indicate elevation, it marked the beginning of the age of'modern cartography. It surpassed any atlas before it in terms of scope(112 double-page folio map) and accuracy. Many of the maps published in this atlas were used in other atlases in many countries as recently as the 1970s. These maps will look great framed and hung individually or, on a large wall, in groups. When unfolded the map measures 17” by 26” approximately. It is dated 1884 When folded up. The small book is 3 ¾” by 5 ¾” The map appears to be hand tinted to me. The map is a bit brittle. There are small splits at the cross folds. One corner was dog-eared and along one side the paper was mis-folded. The map is clean and unmarked. The binding is pretty nice. The spine is rubbed through in one small spot and in one ¾” long spot. Inside. The hinge is split. Please look carefully at the photos and ask questions. I am not a“Map” person. Antique, large and beautifully engraved hand colored map of the English county of Durham- with inset views of Durham Cathedral on the lower left and also featuring an inset view of Durham locally situate in Northumberland. It measures a whopping 25.25”x 31.25”and was engraved by J&C Walker and published January 26. 1831- the date is engraved in the title cartouche and was published in the large folio edition of Atlas of the Counties of England. 1834. The engraving is based on a survey conducted during the years 1819-1820. The paper is heavy and stable and hand colored in shades of green. Pink, peach and blue. The piece is a delightful piece of English History. The Greenwoods were a prestigious firm of publishers during the period 1820-50 who produced large-scale maps of the English counties.
