1603 Ortelius Map SCOTLAND Scotiae Tabula "Sideways" Orientation FINE EXAMPLE!
Scotiae Tabula 47 cm x 35 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Scotland(Van der Krogt 5800:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Certainly one of the most sought-after printed maps of Scotland of all time. This western oriented"sideways" map is a true masterpiece of the engraver's art, here enhanced by superb hand colour work of the very highest order. Ortelius based the cartography largely on Mercator's 1564 eight-sheet wall map of the British Isles. But as a stand-alone map of Scotland this plate is in our view aesthetically unsurpassed and this exceptionally well preserved example ... morewill make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the magnificent strapwork title cartouche. Enhanced by a spouting sea monster at left: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Edinburgh to Glasgow(west. But"up" in the map's orientation) as seen below measures just 5 cm actual size. Notations inform that Loch Ness never freezes and Loch Lomond is prone to"obnoxious tempests" and its fish have no bones: Note elegant calligraphy. Legend in Ireland naming the numbered islands within Loch Lomond: A handsome ship salis to the west. But"above" of the"Iles of Orknay" note pictorial Highland topography: STEIPEREIDUR. A most gentle and tame kind of whale, which for the defence of fishermen fights against other kinds of whales. It is forbidden by Proclamation that any man should kill or hurt this kind of Whale. It has a length of at least 100 cubits. The Latin text on verso is a fascinating document in and of itself and we offer representative excerpts below derived from the 1606 English edition published in London: The inhabitants having abundance of Barley whereof they make a
