vintage British Guard Shaw Munster doll w/Sword & Flag - Made in England
This listing is for a vintage genuine Shaw Munster doll. It was made in Great Britain and was probably a souvenir bought by a tourist to England back in the 1950s or early 1960s. This doll is oh so cute. He is dressed in his British Guard attire. It comes complete with a sword and flag accessory as well. The fragile plastic package it comes in is a little beat up. The plastic package has dents on the back and sides. It appears the doll was never out of the package all these years. The doll measures 7 inches high and 2 and 1/2 inches wide The white gloves are very crudely done. At least in my opinion. The rest of the outfit and the doll are nicely detailed. The doll looks every bit as nice as the day it was made and left the factory. The package may be fair condition but the doll inside and its accessories are in excellent shape.

Near Mainz on 20th January 1488, the son of Andreas Munster(1) In 1505, he joined the Franciscan Order, and four years later was sent to the monastery of St. Katherina in Rufach. There he studied under Konrad Pelikan, who was to have great influence over the young man in the next five years. Pelikan was a teacher of Hebrew, Greek, mathematics and cosmography. Evidently, Munster was a gifted pupil, but his earliest prowess is demonstrated in his mastery of language compiling, among a wide range of books, a Hebrew-Latin dictionary, and translating a large number of books. When ... morePelikan moved to Tübingen in 1514. Munster followed him, and there he met Johann Stöffler, who continued his education in mathematics and astronomy. It was under Stöffler's tuition that the first evidence of Munster's interest in cartography appears. Here again, Munster proved an excellent pupil, and he quickly established a reputation as an outstanding geographer. Dating from about 1514. Or a little later, is Munster's lecture note book. It contains extracts from various publications, with Munster's commentary, but also contains a series of 44 maps drawn by Munster. Of them, 43 are derivative of existing printed materials but one, of the Rhine from Basle to Neuss appears to be an original drawing by Munster himself. Despite the earth-crunching discoveries going on at the time- Vasco Da Gama in Africa and Asia. Colombus in the Americas- the pioneering map-makers at the dawn of the 16th century took a cautious approach, contenting themselves with reproducing interpretations of ideas put forward by Claudius Ptolomaeus(Ptolomey) in his"Geogaphia" of 150 AD. Gradually gaining confidence, however, one or two began to insert some"modern maps" Novae Tabulae) at the back. First was Martin Waldseemuller of Strassburg, who in 1513 added 20 maps based on contemporary knowledge to the 27 ones in the traditional Ptolomeic"pantheon" These included the Tabula Terra Nova devoted to the New World of the Americas, and another delineating India, Burma, Thailand and Malaysia entitled"Tabula Moderna Indiae" But not till 1540, with Sebastian ... moreMuster's edition of Ptolomey's"Geography" was there any map of the continent of Asia as a whole. Misleadingly entitled"India Extrema XIX, Nova Tabula" it was added as one of 20 new maps to a folio atlas of 28 Ptolomey originals, all produced- in the German style- as woodcuts Looking at it(see pics above) One might think it not much an improvement on Ptolomey's originals. The last picture shows the outline of a Ptolomey map of India. which is, incidentaly, appearing in this same eBay auction) But look more sympathetically, and one can see that it has stretched the Indian peninsular down somewhat towards its proper shape. And we not only have"Cathay" top right) as a nod to Marco Polo's achievements, but the Indian cities of Goa, Canonor and Calicut where the Portuguese had set up trading posts, and on the other side of the Gulf of Bengal, Malacca- one of the great entrerpots of Southeast Asia- is identified. HOWEVER. I NOTICED THAT THE BLACK TRIM THROUGH OUT THE BOX MIGHT HAVE BEEN REPAINTED AND THEY DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB AT IT. REST OF THE BOX IS ORIGINAL CONDITION. Box is still original except the black touch up that was done. There are minor signs of age wear such as dings and scratches through out the box; but still in very nice shape. 1588 Highly Decorative Munster Engraving of Roman Emperors
1588 Munster Engraving- Von Italia. Keyser Sebastian Munster was responsible for the most complete of early illustrated geographies when he produced his'Cosmographia' in the early 1540's. Perhaps only Schedel's'Nuremberg Chronicle' had a greater impact on the early Renaissance view of the world. Munster used a variety of woodcut views and maps to complete a very detailed view of Europe. With more speculative items for other continents. Cosmographia' was a great success and went through many editions into the early 1600's. This page comes from a 1588 German edition of'Cosmographia' There are three engravings on one side of the page and two on the reverse- portraits of emperors.
