NORTHUMBERLAND – Robert Morden, Antique Map
An attractive and detailed map of the county by Robert Morden. I’m unsure of the edition. The map itself measures approx 35cm x 41cm. With a horizontal centrefold. T he map is in very good condition with one proviso. A lovely clear and very bright impression with no fading. Very clean with no foxing or uneven browning. Lovely colouring and great decorative value. There is some crinkly creasing that actually looks fine and in-keeping. The only significant condition issue is that there are remnants of paste on much of the verso and bubbling along the old binding material along the centrefold; I assume that the map was glued to a backing at some stage and was subsequently removed. Thankfully without damage to the paper. In terms of the map image itself, it appears clean when looked at flat but when held at a certain angle to the light you can ... moremake out quite a few patches of thin shininess; maybe seeped through from the verso. Or Viscount Clare's Regiment. Until 1751, like most other regiments, it was known successively by the names of the colonels who commanded them at the time. The Regiment was transferred to ... morethe British Service in 1689. From 5 June 1685 its order of precedence was the 5th Regiment of the Line. It was not until 1 July 1751 that it was designated by that number as the"5th Regiment of Foot" when the system of naming regiments after their Colonels was dropped. As a fusilier regiment, it wears a hackle, which in this case is red over white. This distinction was originally a white plume which His Majesty's Fifth Regiment of Foot had taken from the head dress of fallen French troops at St. Lucia in December 1778. Original Antique Document Over Two Centuries Old* REVOLUTIONARY WAR LAND GRANT* Pennsylvania- 1794* Albert Lindo* This historic document dates back to the time of George Washington’s Presidency. And it involves a land grant to one of the soldiers who had served in the Revolutionary War. After the American colonies gained their independence from England. Many soldiers were given large tracts of land in the western territories. Although in part this was a form of payment for their military service, it was also hoped that these men would help to settle the"frontier" regions(western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. which were then the"Wild West" In Pennsylvania, large areas in the northern and western parts of that state were undeveloped in 1790, and many other sections were very thinly populated. In these areas, Donation ... moreLands" were set aside in order to give tracts to each veteran Pennsylvania soldier and officer who served in Continental service to the end of the war. This land grant involves four hundred acres in"the county of Northumberland or Mifflin" in Pennsylvania. And the recipient is Albert Lindo, who then sells the land to Philadelphia attorney Joseph Thomas for five shillings! This land was adjacent to a tract that had been granted to"Hugh Lindo" This document was witnessed by Peter Wistor and it is dated October 15. 1794. Northumberland County. Created in 1772, encompassed a huge area and would eventually have more than two dozen other counties carved out of it. Mifflin County was formed in 1789 and named for Thomas Mifflin, a soldier during the Revolutionary War who became the first Governor of Pennsylvania as a State of the Union. Because Mifflin County was formed from parts of Northumberland County(as well as Cumberland County) this is probably the reason that both counties are named in this land grant. A Mapp of NORTHUMBERLAND With its Hundreds by Richard Blome. Published London circa 1735 by Thomas Bakewell in"England Exactly Described" A fine copper engraved county map of Northumberland. Features two inset maps of Holy Island(Lindisfarne) with"a scale conteyning 32 pearches to one inch" and The Farne Islands with a scale of miles. This somewhat more scarce Bakewell edition was published in a larger book than the usual Taylor Blomes and hence has only a single fold as opposed to the three usually found. Some light patchy browning as seen. Centre fold as issued. Left margin cropped as issued. Sheet size approx. 10" x 8" 260mm x 195mm) on hand laid paper. Richard Blome( 1635-1705) was an active and prominent map publisher in 1670's London. He drew much contemporary crticism for blatant plagiarism but this ... moredid not seem to impede his success. No Reserve, Free Shipping This is a wonderful antique commemorative plaque crafted by Dixon& Co. of Great Britain in the early 19th century. The soft past porcelain features a beautiful pink luster with gilded scalloped edges. Framed in the center is a transfer print depiction of the HMS Northumberland 74 gun ship. There were eight so-named ships in the Royal Navy after the English county of Northumberland. It appears as though Dixon& Co. were in business between 1813-1819 so the plaque may be confidently dated to this period. The plaque is accompanied by an auction receipt. 100% Genuine 17th century edition of the first map of Northumberland originally published by Christopher Saxton in 1579. The original plate updated and decorated. Includes Berwick. Newcastle and Hadrian's Wall. Philip Lea bought the set of Saxton printing plates in the 1680s he improved and embellished them with coats of arms and other features. The map detail is essentially Saxton's. But there are additions of town plans of Newcastle and Berwick-on-Tweed and some roads. This has wide margins and the whole sheet measures 21 x 17 inches. A real bargain. The Philip Lea edition of Saxton maps sell for thousands. THIS MAP IS NOT REPAIRED OR DAMAGED. I notice that the left and bottom margin line is missing, this is a printing error. The main line south hugs the coast as far as there and then progresses inland with a branch line going north east to Warkworth Harbour, via Broomhill. Another branch had struck north east from the mainline at Chathill, bound for Sea Houses. The main line continues south to Morpeth where is runs west to Reedsmouth and Bellingham or coastally to Newcastle or inland to Newcastle. At Newcastle a line follows the Tyne west. With a loop north and south of the river and a short junction line between them- they merge north of Bradley hall. This is a antiqued parchment reproduction of a John Speede c.1610 map of the county of Northumberland. It has never been out of the packaging The Northumberland landscape spreads from the high country of the Pennines and Cheviots to the river area of the coastal plain. Newcastle was the most important and prosperous town of the area and is depicted in the top right part of the old map. There are many castles in Northumberland which were established as a defence on the border of the frontier with Scotland. The last major invasion from Scotland was in 1513 which was halted at Flodden field through the prompt action of Catherine of Aragon. Hadrian's Wall is detailed as Picts Wall. Still the more colloquial name. A fine example of John Speed's early 17th Century UK maps. The map is 45.5cm x 38cm and comes unframed The perfect Present for those with a love of local History. A Little Bit About Robert Morden(c.1650-1703) was a British bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of Camden's"Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and ... more1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names[1] Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts(e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch, published by Joan Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography. He published a new map of the Tamil homeland, Coylot Wanees Country, in 17th century Ceylon island. He is also known for several very rare early maps of the British colonies in North America, which are now among the earliest and most sought after maps for collectors of old American maps.
