Rare Large Antique 1893 Bacon's Folio Atlas Map of Southern SCOTLAND
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Scotland(South) Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The maps ... moreare lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. This Commercial and Library Atlas offers a refreshing change from Bartholomew's widely adopted treatment of the world's geography with pleasant surprises like Tasmania occupying a full double page map

The town of Kelso came into being as a direct result of the creation of Kelso Abbey in 1128. The town's name stems from the fact that the earliest settlement stood on a chalky outcrop. And the town was ... moreknown as Calkou(or perhaps Calchfynydd) in those early days. Standing on the opposite bank of the river Tweed from the now-vanished royal burgh of Roxburgh. Kelso and its sister hamlet of Wester Kelso were linked to the burgh by a ferry at Wester Kelso. A small hamlet existed before the completion of the Abbey in 1128 but the settlement started to flourish with the arrival of the monks. Many were skilled craftsmen, and they helped the local population as the village expanded. The Abbey controlled much of life in Kelso-area burgh of barony, called Holydean, until the Reformation in the 16th century. After that, the power and wealth of the Abbey declined. The Kerr family of Cessford took over the barony and many of the Abbey's properties around the town. By the 17th century, they virtually owned Kelso. In Roxburgh Street. Outside the Haldanes supermarket, is the outline of a horseshoe petrosomatoglyph where the horse of Charles Edward Stuart cast a shoe as he was riding it through the town on his way to Carlisle in 1745. He is also said to have planted a white rosebush in his host's garden, descendants of which are still said to flourish in the neighbourhood. This is an i

ABOUT US VISIT OUR STORE SALES SPECIALS Antique Map-GREAT BRITAIN-SCOTLAND-ORKNEY-SHETLAND ISLANDS-Andree-1904 Description: This large antique map is taken from; Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas in 126 Haupt-Und 139 Nebenkarten' Bielefeld; Leipzig: Velhagen& Klasing 1899. Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several German and foreign editions 1881-1937. It was named after Richard Andree(1835-1912) and published by Velhagen& Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, rather than copper plate engraving, but reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief(just like letterpress printing) V& K was able to offer detailed maps at a much lower price than competing works, such as the 7th and 8th editions of Stielers Handatlas. Artists and Engravers: Richard ... moreAndree(1835- 1912) was. Like his father Karl Andree, a German geographer noted for devoting himself especially to ethnography.
