The book is in decent condition for it's age with some fraying around the binding and a few pages pulled from the stitching. One of the maps has a slight tear outside the actual image (see Pic). The spine is still tight. This is an ORIGINAL with the maps (including the 6 foldouts) and book plate are all tipped in, making them easily removable. Focuses on and depicts the region with a level of detail not found on most maps issued in traditional American and non-Dutch European atlases. The top map shows depths& heights of land and water on and around the island. The bottom map shows the geological formation of the island. The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting map. Sheet measures c. 16 3/4" W x 12 3/4" H. Engraved area measures c. 14 3/4" W x 10 3/4" H. 8556] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Two Boston Geologic Maps 1932 USGS bedrock & glacial Massachusetts Geology Mass
This auction is for two 1932 Geologic maps of Boston. MA measuring approximately 22" x 30" each. These maps were included as Plates 1 and 2 of the 1932 USGS Bulletin 839"Geology of the Boston Area Massachusetts" The first map(Plate 1) is titled"Map and Section Showing Areal Geology of the Boston and Boston Bay Quadrangles, Massachusetts" This map is of the Bedrock Geology. The second map(Plate 2) is titled"Map Showing Surficial Geology of the Boston and Boston Bay Quadrangles, Massachusetts" This map focuses on the glacial deposits. Both maps has been mounted on a canvas backing, laminated and rolled. They do show significant fading. There is some staining on canvas backing of the Bedrock map, but it does not show through to the front of the map. These maps were originally folded, so the fold lines ... moredo show under the lamination. There are also some small nail holes along the top margin of the bedrock map, and the bottom margin of the surficial map where they were mounted. He made important contributions to the study of minerals, especially in the field of crystallography. He was the son of the famous geologist and mineralogist James Dwight Dana. This cabinet photo was removed from an 1883 Yale University yearbook. At that time individual photographs like this were inserted into spaces in the yearbooks. As a child in the 1960's this is pure nostalgia for me. In the days when you could collect your own sand from the coloured cliffs of Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight. You were sold a test tube and a small scrapper and then set off to collect your own coloured sands to fill the test tube, it was amazing simple seaside fun.Unfortunately you can not collect your own sand from the cliffs these days, you have to by the sand from official shops on the beach. There is no where else in England with such a diversity of coloured sand in one location. And this sand I collected in 1962 still has its original unique colours.It would be great to mount various grains and examine them under the microscope if you had the skill.If you are skilled in mounting slides there must be a several thousand coloured grains or more in the test tube, and you could make ... moredifferent coloured spectacular arrangements like the ones of diatoms, to sell commercially at I would think a very fine profit.This test tube full of different coloured sand is approximately 4 inches long with a diameter of just under half an inch. It measures about 19 1/4" by 25 3/4" 48.9 x 65.4 cm) to the neat line, with ample margins. The map is one sheet of what would appear to have been originally a 4- sheet map. The 3 other sheets are no t present. Never theless. The presence of the title at the bottom left makes thi s sheet entirely suitable for framing and display. The map shows minor edge wear. Foxing.
