Original antique map of the West Riding of Yorkshire by C & J Greenwood, 1834
An original. Engraved antique map of the WEST RIDING of YORKSHIRE by C& J Greenwood. Published in 1834 the map is based on a survey by the Greenwood brothers of 1817/18. It is framed(Hogarth-style frame 830x670mm) unmounted, and has original hand colour. Whittaker(p143) described the map as'beautifully engraved' It features a vignette of Ripon Minster(bottom left) wapontakes(named on the map itself) compass rose and scale. It shows- in great detail- towns, villages, castles, parks, moors, commons, woods, hills etc. Interestingly, it also shows the first railway line in the county: Leeds-Middleton. This is an outstanding map in very good condition. However, please note that because of the large dimensions of the map postage in-frame could result in damage. For sale is an amazing map that was created in 1610 and printed on or around that date. The hand colored map is of Yorkshire in Northern England. The bottom left corner of the map reads: Performed by John Speed and to be sold in Popes head alley. Against the Exchange by John Sudbury and G. Humble. Cum Privilegio 1610" The map is filled with symbols, family names, landmarks, and amazing design and artistry. You can truly get lost with all of the details in this map. The back of the map is a two page spread that describes Yorkshire's history and sections/towns. Please note that this map is framed with glass on both sides. The glass on the back side has a taped crack. The back glass panel is loose too. So you need to be careful when handling this item. Vintage popular edition ordnance survey contoured road map of Kirkby Lonsdale and Hawes in Yorkshire. Bound in the original illustrated covers. Previous owners name to the upper section. Some wear to the edges and corners of the covers. Paper map. Map itself is in good condition, save for a little wear to the folds and joins. One of 4000 reprinted in 1929 from the revised edition of 1928. Scale is 1 inch to 1 mile. One of a number of vintage ordnance survey maps I'm selling. One of a number of similar items I am selling. 1736 Bowen Road Map- Whitby, Malton, Rillington, Staxton, Scarborough, Yorkshire
An original antique road map taken from the 1736 edition of Emanuel Bowen's"Britannia Depicta" see frontispiece not included) This popular pocket-sized publication. First printed in 1720, covered all of the principal roads of England and Wales for the horse and rider with every mile marked along the way and all of the landmarks noted- churches, houses, windmills, watermills, streams and uphill/downhill topography(downhills are identified by upside-down hills) Interesting notes about towns, such as market days, are added to the sides. Each strip has its own compass rose to help guide the traveller. This map follows two roads to the east coast of England in Yorkshire. The left two strips cover 15 miles of road running over the Yorkshire Moors and dropping down into Whitby. The right two strips show the road starting in Malton ... moreand ending in Scarborough(along the route of today's A64) Passing through Rillington and Staxton on the way. Page size 8 x 5.5 inches Emanuel Bowen(fl. 1714-1767) Emanuel Bowen(1714-1767) had the high distinction to be named Royal Mapmaker to both to King George II of England and Louis XV of France. Based in London from 1714 onwards. Bowen was highly regarded for producing some of the largest, most detailed, most accurate and most attractive maps of his era. He is known to have worked with some of the most prominent cartographic names of the period including Herman Moll, John Owen, and Thomas Kitchin. Despite his renown and success, Bowen, like many cartographers, died in poverty. Upon Emanuel Bowen's death, his cartographic work was taken over by his son, Thomas Bowen( 1790) who also died in poverty.

Original antique map of Yorkshire by John Speed, 1627
An original antique map of YORKSHIRE(York Shire) 1627 edition with the imprint of Sudbury and Humble. The map has a Hogarth frame(570x450mm) Is unmounted and expertly hand coloured. There is English text verso(see photo) though the frame is not double-glazed. The map features the royal arms, a compass rose, a sailing ship and mileage scale. c1760 FOLDING MAP OF YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND - Emanuel Bowen - Large English Atlas
A superb and rare antique map of Yorkshire in England taken from"The Large English Atlas" engraved by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin published 1760. The map has been laid down on linen in 16 equal sections to create a folding version of the published map for ease of use. The map is entitled"An Accurate Map of the County of York divided into its Ridings and subdivided into Wapentakes" Concentric circles emanating from the City of York are drawn at one mile intervals. Two superb decorative cartouches. One featuring the title and the other recognizing the dedication to the Duke of Richmond- see scans. Good condition- minor age toning to the edges and folds. Original hand outline color to the Ridings. Map size 28 x 21 inches Emanuel Bowen was a print and map seller by trade. He was also engraver to both George II and Louis ... moreXV of France. From 1714 onwards he worked in London and began to produce some of the finest and most appealing maps of that era. He had great plans to publish a complete County Atlas, however he simply did not have the means to achieve this alone; so he joined forces with another map-maker, Thomas Kitchin, and together they published'The Large English Altas' In 1749. Before the completion of the Atlas, they began to issue the individual maps and in 1760 the Atlas was finally finished. With few exceptions, the maps in'The Large English Atlas' were the largest(27" x 20" county maps ever to have been produced. They were also quite different to other maps of their time because of the topographical and historical details which were engraved around them in any blank spaces. CERTAINLY VINTAGE. POSSIBLY ANTIQUE? FRAMED BEHIND GLASS COLOURED ILLUSTRATED MAP OF YORKSHIRE NORTH RIDING THAT CERTAINLY DISPLAYS SUPERBLY. This fine map is in very good overall condition. With just minor age related wear as they say to its gilt and wood frame. This is limited to very light surface scratches and minor scrapes as expected. With nothing major to concern this charming map therefore certainly displays superbly. Please note that for some reason our main photographs show a yellow cast over the top area of the map. Probably due to us having differing light sources when the photography occurred. In reality this does not show as such. The map is actually an even hue throughout. Here's a scarce item.I'm not an expert on maps and will describe it as best I can. It's a large. Double sided, folding map produced, in colour, by the Scarborough Company in 1906. On one side is a map of Yorkshire.The other side is of England and Wales.It folds out to dimensions of 35 x 39 1/2 inches. This is a lovely colour map of the East Ridings of Yorkshire which was taken from the book"The County Maps of Old England" by Thomas MOULE which was published in 1990. The page measures approximately 9.5" x 12" check the photos) and the map has been printed onto good thick quality paper. It would look lovely framed! Thomas MOULE was one of the most distinctive and best-loved of early Victorian mapmakers and he first published his maps in 1830. His work is often compared to his 17th century predecessor John Speed who published similar maps in the 1630's(many of which I have also got listed on ebay) Because it has been taken from a book there is the description of the next map in the book on the back of this map.
