Victorian Map - NORTH & EAST RIDING of YORKSHIRE - Bartholomew c1890
Map by the legendary J. G. Bartholomew. Published around 1890. The map has been double mounted ready to frame. With double mount the overall size is 10 inches by 12 inches. The aperture is approximately 6 inches by 8 inches. There is another map on the reverse but that obviously does not show due to the mounting process. The atlas from which this map came was in distressed condition on the outside and some of the maps were loose and damaged but we have only mounted maps in good condition with the mount having been placed in a way that reveals only the very best portions of this very rare item. Please note this offer is for one map only. Would look magnificent framed and would make an excellent gift. Certificate of authenticity of date provided. Check out my! 1842 Lewis Atlas England Wales Map Antique Old Book London Yorkshire Lancashire
An Atlas. Comprising Maps of the Several Counties, Divided into Unions, and of the Islands of Guernsey, Jersey, and Man; with a Map of England and Wales, and a Plan of London and its Environs. London: Published by S Lewis and Co. 87, Hatton Garden. M.DCCC.XLII" This is the map volume that accompanies Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of England and Wales. This was first issued in 1831. This edition is dated 1842. The maps are all by R Creighton. And give a superb picture of early Victorian England and Wales. The London map is particularly sought-after, being superbly detailed, and has often been removed but is present in this example. So too the large(54cms x 41.5cms) fold-out map of England and Wales which highlights the principal Roads, Railways, Canals, and Rivers. I counted 52 County maps, which include 3 Island maps(Man, Jersey, ... moreand Guernsey etc. Many of these are fold-out and so quite large- Yorkshire is some 54cms x 43.5cms. They all have lovely outline original handcolouring. The Atlas is 33cms x 26cms. Condition: The boards etc. of this Atlas are not in good condition. The boards are marked and bumped. Much of the spine is missing, and the back board is completely detached. Inside, there is an old bookplate"W Sprent" The front endpaper and title page are detached. From there on things improve greatly. The Atlas is complete, including the admired London plan and the fold-out map of England and Wales. I counted 52 County maps(which include Islands) There is some foxing, but all very acceptable, and with the most bright and attractive outline handcolouring as you can see in the photos. Many of the maps are fold-out and as is often the case some of these have torn along the folds, and even into the maps a little(see the photo of Yorkshire for one of the worst offenders) but these are not large faults. Free postage within the UK. I will send worldwide- £20.00 to USA etc. PLEASE NOTE: I also have the 4 England volumes(in a 5th edition 1842) and the 2 Wales volumes(2nd edition 1842) of th

It says at the bottom'Yorkshire portiin added 1895' which was when it was also published and there are no other more recent dates so I assume that it is a 1895 map. The extremities are- top left, Marfleet, bottom left Habrough Grange south of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, top right Tunstall Drain and the Coastguard Station north of Waxholme, bottom right The Old Den and Greedy Gut south of the Kilnsea Clays. It incudes the NER Hull& Withernsea Branch Railway. The map is in good condition, no tears or taping. I will have to fold this map to post it, otherwise postage would be expensive. Having retired and become a pensioner I am selling part of my collection of books that I have amassed. Some quite recently and some over many years, plus postcards also from my collection, some having been my mother's and so are mainly early 20th century, and lots of old photos and other items, and also clothes and o
