The somewhat more scarce Bakewell edition was published in a larger book than the usual Taylor Blomes and hence has only a single fold as opposed to the three usually found. Light patchy browning. A minor edge split to the original centre fold has been reinforced verso. Lower margin cropped as issued. Sheet size approx. 10" x 8" 260mm x 195mm) on hand laid paper. Richard Blome( 1635-1705) was an active and prominent map publisher in 1670's London. He drew much contemporary crticism for blatant plagiarism but this did not seem to impede his success. 1701 Rare Antique Map -"WILTSHIRE"- Stonehenge - J. Seller - Camden's Britannia
A rare antique map of"Wiltshire" Drawn and engraved by John Seller and published in Camden's"Britannia Abridg'd" in 1701(see scan of frontispiece- not included) The map was first published five years earlier(1696) in John Seller's"Anglia Contracta" A travellers atlas of small maps which enjoyed considerable success and was printed in several editions from 1696 to 1703. This example, however, was published in Camden's Britannia Abridg'd of 1701(the year that John Seller died) again designed to be portable for the traveller. As testament to the quality of the maps the original engraved plates were purchased by Francis Grose some 70 years later and republished in The Antiquities of England and Wales between 1773 and 1787. However the original cartouches were simplified. John Seller's name ... moreremoved( approximately two thirds of the 1701 maps carried his name- this one does not) and the maps were published at the top of a page of text. The later Grose versions are therefore much less rare and are clearly distinguishable by including the text and not having the clear vertical folds which are featured in the originals as they were folded into the octavo sized publication. A Tudor Atlas by John Speed" which was printed in 1988. The map has been printed in colour on 2 pages of good quality paper. It measures 40cm x 30cm and would look lovely framed. As well as the map of Wiltshire. There is a map of Salisbury and of Stone Henge. On the rear of the map is some information about the county which describes the history and geography as it was in the 1600's. Speed’s Atlas was the first to show all the counties of Britain with towns. Villages and boundaries as they were at the time as they were at the time of Elizabeth I. Antique framed. Hand painted map of Wiltshire, England. 9 1/4" by 11 3/4" overall. Not sure the exact dimensions of the map because I won't take it apart. It has two images- one of Stone Henge and the other of Salisbury Cathedral. It is absolutely gorgeous. It was framed by Beach's Book Shop on Salisbury. 52-54 High St. It's no longer Beach's but rather a Prezzo restaurant- you can see on the street view on Google Maps. Wiltshire Somerset and their early railways ORDNANCE SURVEY WITH OVER PRINTING OR RAILWAY REVISION– CIRCA 1870? I do not know the scale of this map so I estimate it as follows: Wilton to Amesbury 3 ½ inches. Amesbury to Frome 12 inches. Google gives these distances as 10.3 miles and 28.7 miles(modern roads) I am therefore assuming this is an unusual 3 INCHES TO THE MILE This map is monochrome. It is linen backed and dissected. That is: the sections are mounted separately so there is no damage caused by folding. The map is in good condition, there are some pin ... moreholes in the linen at the junctions. The centre of the map is marked as 11 degrees west and the right hand edge is 10 degrees and 30” west. The latitude is given in minutes but not degrees. This is odd because Devises. Roughly in the middle of this map and given here as 11.58' west, 51. 22' north is in fact 1.994° West 51.353° North. So this is a meridian lined up roughly with Denmark or the western edge of Germany. Or Sardinia or Lake Constanc e. This map measures 26 ½ inches by 20 ½ inches. It is divided into 18 sections. The verso is plain. THE FOLLOWING TOWNS ARE FEATURED: BRISTOL AND CLIFTON ON THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE MAP. An attractive and detailed steel-engraved map of the county. Published by Archibald Fullarton& Co. in James Bell's“ The Parliamentary Gazetteer of England and Wales” On quite heavy paper. The printed area is approx 19x24cm on an untrimmed sheet approx 26x32cm; horizontal centrefold as issued. Engraving platemark visible. Condition is good. Quite heavy paper that feels healthy. A sharp impression. The map area is clean and bright. Some faint uneven browning, including along the centrefold. Some light dappled spotting, most noticeable outside the printed area. Edges in good condition. Verso blank and clean. I’ll post the map folded supported by some rigid board.
