He was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732 and later collaborated with him on"The Large English Atlas" 1755) which included all the counties in England and Whales. Kitchin had his own shop in Holborn, London, where he produced numerous maps, as well as books, on an array of topics, from watercolor techniques to topography. Pieter van der(Petrus Kaerius) Pieter van den Keere was one of a number of refugees who fled from religious persecution in the Low Countries between the years 1570 and 1590. He moved to London in 1584 with his sister who married Jodocus Hondius. Also a refugee there, and through Hondius he undoubtedly learned his skills as an engraver and cartographer. In the course of a long working life he engraved a large number of individual maps for prominent cartographers of the day but he also produced an Atlas of the Netherlands(1617-22) and county maps of the British Isles which have become known as Miniature Speeds, a misnomer which calls for some explanation. In about 1599 he engraved plates for 44 maps of the English and Welsh counties. The regions of Scotland and the Irish provinces. The English maps were based on Saxton, the Scottish on Ortelius and the Irish on the famous map by Boazio. These maps were not published at once in book form but there is evidence which suggests a date of issue(in Amsterdam) between 1605 and 1610 although at least one authority believes they existed only in proof form until 1617 when Willem Blaeu issued them with a Latin edition of Camden's Britannia. 1940s Sterling Silver Gravy Ladle Spoon by Westmorland - George and Martha
This gravy ladle by Westmorland is Sterling Silver. It is the George and Martha Pattern. As you will see from the photos. It has a very nice patina. I did not polish it because I didn't want to remove the patina, so instead I washed it with dish soap and water. It measures 7-1/4 inches long. It weighs 3.2 ounces. As silver prices climb. MILK GLASS BOWL Manufacturer is Westmoreland Glass Company Circa 1940's Heavily sculpted with Dolphin patterned feet History: The Westmoreland Glass Company grew out of the Specialty Glass Company of East Liverpool. Ohio, which, in 1890 was producing pitchers. Goblets, tumblers, and glass novelty items overseen by two brothers named George and Charles West. With the backing of Ira Brainard from nearby Pittsburgh, the brothers soon bought out the Ohio founders and changed the firm’s name to the Westmoreland Specialty Company. In the 1920's it was milk glass that kept the company in the black with an estimated 90 percent of all production between the 1920s and’50s made of milk glass. Westmoreland milk glass pieces were considered some of the finest examples of the material in the country. The Company’s marks evolved from 1910 to 1929. ... moreA“W” within a keystone was used followed in the late 1940's by a stacked“W” and“G” Various logo styles came and went. This is a super nice purple/amethyst carnival piece which has a unique design. The Corinth pattern by Westmorland. With a beautiful carnival luster, there are no chips, cracks, or crazing but there is a manufacturing defect with a dimple present on the underside and beneath each rib and there are a few surface scratches on the bowls interior(see photos) Fairly inexpensive, this will make a nice addition to a collection. Westmorland Lady Hilton Sterling Silver Serving Spoon. This is a beautiful sterling spoon. It is approx. 8 1/4" long and weighs approx. 59 grams. The spoon does show signs of use. But it is not bent or dented. There are some surface scratches and some very small spots. Also if you run your finger around the edge of the bowl, you can feel some slight roughness. Wallace Westmorland STERLING SILVER Handle Milburn Rose Set of 6 Dinner Knives Here is a beautiful set of six(6) sterling silver handle dinner knives in the gorgeous Westmorland Milburn Rose pattern. The handles are sterling and the blades are stainless. As sterling is too soft to hold a cutting edge. The blades are stamped“Stainless” and the five of the six sterling handles are stamped“Sterling Handle. Four of the six are in excellent condition; one shows a small pit on the blade on one side and one has several pits on one side and one on the top rim of the blade(please see photos. Note– what looks like a scratch on one is not a scratch, just a reflection in the silver of the ceiling joint) The elegant and beautiful Milburn Rose pattern. Discontinued decades ago, was one of five patterns made by Wallace Silversmiths to be marketed by Westmorland ... moreexclusively for home sales in the 1940s. To quote from the original Westmorland Sterling brochure(sorry– the brochure is not included) This rich masterpiece of design embodies the spirit and glory of the English Renaissance, the period of rebirth of beauty and culture. The rose is the central motif and its jeweled appearance is the result of expert craftsmanship. Its name goes back to a romantic but little known dinner party of those times, a party on the high seas. John Winthrop, newly appointed Colonial governor, and noted lady passengers enroute to Plymouth were guests of the ship’s captain. Peter Milburn… The knives measure 9-inches long with 4-inches of that being the sterling handle. Each one weighs 2.4 ounces for a total weight of 14.1 ounces. We have here vintage sterling silver flatware in the Westmorland Milburn Rose pattern. All pieces bear the Westmorland Sterling mark and are without monograms. They are in good condition. Showing only minor surface wear and scratches. All flatware has been stored in a Westmoreland pacific silvercloth chest between uses. We have not polished them prior to listing them.
