The knives measure 9-inches long with 4-inches of that being the sterling handle. The handles of the knives are sterling and the blades are stainless. As sterling is too soft to hold a cutting edge. Both forks, both consume soup spoons and one cream soup spoon are VICTORY pieces with the WWII Morse code marking on the back of the handles. Prior to that this same pattern was made by Wallace starting about 1904 and was called Hampton. The pattern features a plume at the tip of the handle and a scroll edge design. There are no monograms on any of these pieces. They are in estate condition- which indicates they were previously owned. They are in very good condition but they do have some minor wear just from use. We have not tried to polish or buff any of these pieces. Purchased at an estate auction comes with Cherry Wood box lined with" Pacific Silver Cloth" The box is solid wood and has a few imperfections; however this can be refinished. It has done its job and protected the contents. Produced in the mid-1940s. The set is in excellent condition with no scratches or dents and no bent tines. AND seven of the eight forks are Victory pieces, with the Morse code marking on the back of the handle. The elegant and beautiful Milburn Rose pattern. Discontinued decades ago, was one of five patterns made by Wallace Silversmiths to be marketed by Westmorland exclusively for home sales in the 1940s. To quote from the original Westmorland Sterling brochure(sorry– the brochure is not included) This rich masterpiece of design embodies the spirit and glory of the English Renaissance, the period of rebirth of beauty and culture. The rose is the central motif ... moreand its jeweled appearance is the result of expert craftsmanship. Its name goes back to a romantic but little known dinner party of those times, a party on the high seas. John Winthrop, newly appointed Colonial governor, and noted lady passengers enroute to Plymouth were guests of the ship’s captain. Peter Milburn… The fork measures 6 1/2-inches long and each weighs about 1.2 ounces for a combined weight of 9.5 ounces. Seven of the forks have the“Westmorland Sterling” mark with the ram’s head on the back. Followed by the Victory code and the eighth has the Westmorland mark without the Victory code. The Victory code is Morse code… the coding for“V” for Victory. During World War II. It was impossible to get sterling silver for domestic products. However, Westmorland salesmen continued to go door to door taking orders for their sterling. If the customer was willing to order and wait until after the war for delivery, some portion of the proceeds went towards the war effort. When the war was over, the orders that had been placed during the war were filled with sterling flatware which ad the“ mark next to the“Westmorland Sterling” on the back of each piece.
