Exhibiting particularly the Nautical Researches of Captain James Cook, with all the recent Discoveries to the present Time, The Whole Engraved under the immediate Superintendence of, corrected and improved, by Samuel Lewis, Geographer. Description: A late unrecorded state of Arrowsmith's double hemisphere map of the world on a globular projection. Dating to 1838 and published well after the death of both Aaron Arrowsmith and Samuel Lewis. This is without a doubt the last iteration of this seminal map. The present example follows the re-engraving of Arrowsmith's globular projection by Philadelphia publisher Samuel Lewis for sale to American audiences. ... moreThe Lewis re-engraving, which was issued in partnership with Aaron Arrowsmith and T. L. Plowman, appeared in 1809 and is itself extremely scarce, with only two examples being known. This variant, published 19 years later, is even rarer and is the only known example. Arrowsmith's original map of 1794 was one of the great cartographic achievements of his age. The map was designed to illustrate the important discoveries and navigations of Captain James Cook. All subsequent variants on Arrowsmith's map follow his basic globular model and include both an illustration of the great navigator and markings showing the tracks of his three voyages of discovery. In 1808, when Lewis re-engraved Arrowsmith's map for the American market, he included some updated information and fully re-engraved cartouche work. 1875 Meiji 8 Japanese Wall Map of Japan WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Dai Nihon Chiri Zenzu Description: This is a monumental Japanese map of Japan prepared in 1875 or Meiji 8. Covers the entirety of Japan inclusive of Hokkaido and the Ryukyu Islands. Cartographically this map. Like most 18th century maps of Japan, harkens to the Ino Tadataka surveys of the 18th century, though this example does exhibit considerable revision. Even so, the influence of the Meiji Ishin or Meiji Restoration is evident in the form of the prefecture structure adopted in 1871. Stylistically, this map strays significantly from Edo period cartography prepared under the Tokugawa Shogunate, and, though issued early in the Meiji period, exhibits considerable western, particularly British, cartographic influence. One curious aspect of this ... moremap is that it appears unfinished. Various empty cartouches appear throughout the map but are empty and no specific area is textually identified. This unusual omission may stem from a politic decision to discontinue the map in anticipation of further revisions, or simply suggest that the completion of the map was interrupted for other, unknowable, reasons. 1940's Alaska Wall Map by Kroll Map Company
For sale is a map of Alaska measuring 31 1/2 by 49 inches. The map was made by Kroll Map Company. There is no exact date but it reads compiled from the latest surveys and they are using the population data of 1939 and it has aviation fields of January 1941. So I believe its from the early 40's. The map has been folded and in storage for a while. Creases show. Along the creases there is wear and some small wear holes- If framed and under glass. I don't believe these would be very noticeable. Hello. You are viewing my sale for a Vintage Souvenir D'Haiti Wood Carving Of The Map Of Haiti. This is a Heavy Haiti Carving Wall Plaque. The carving shows the various areas in and around Haiti. The carving appears to have been done with one piece of wood. This carving measures 16 and 1/4" long by 11 and 1/8" tall by 5/8" thick. It is a lovely wood carving that must have taken an extremely long time to carve. I presume that this was once an item that one could purchase when visiting the country. This item is in good condition with some minor wear and minor chips. There are no repairs or breaks present. Please view all my photographs for further details. Please note all sales are final. Antique / Vintage Wall Mount Cherry Wooden Map Case
This is a Large Antique/ Vintage Wall Mounted Wooden Map Case. The wood has the warm glow and color that characterizes cherry and we believe the case is predominently made from cherry. But we are not experts on woods and we do not know for certain. There is possible use of secondary woods, and a small repair at each end of the front panel that appears to have been made with small pieces of walnut. The case appears to be quite old but we do not have a specific age attribution as to whether it is antique or just vintage. The only provenance we have is that the person we bought it from purchased it in Minnesota. The map case is a truly beautiful old piece for use simply as part of your decor. Or it could additionally be repurposed for a variety of uses. It be a wonderful display piece for an antique themed restaurant, hotel or lodge lobby, cabin, ... moreor log home. The case is 59" long. Nearly six feet, and the main gallery photo illustrates the large size of the case displayed on one of our fireplace mantels. The overall maximum dimensions including the lid are about 59" x 8 1/4" x 5 1/8" The latter dimension is where the lid extends out; the corresponding dimension of the case is about 4 3/4" Please see the Condition section below for information regarding the hardware and construction. The original instruction label is still in place. It is very darkened and discolored. My assumption is that this is due to many years of contact with the oils in the wood. I was not able to find any maker's mark or other identification. As you can see from a pair of photos. Each map apparently had a rod through it. One end was seated in a hole at one end, and the other was fitted along a channel at the other end to hold it securely in place as detailed in the instructions. Vtg Embroidered Old Map BLAEU World'Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis 1605 Wall Art Tapestry This beautiful World Map tapestry is a reproduction of Blaeu's large world map of 1605. The engraver Josua van den Ende signature can be seen in the lower right corner. The most striking characteristic are the superb border decorations. Along the top are allegorical of the sun and the moon and the known five planets- Mercury. Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Down the sides are, on the left, four panels illustrating the elements(Fire, Water, Air and Earth) and on the right, the four seasons. Along the bottom are seven vignettes showing the seven ancient wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus over the harbour at Rhodos, the Pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus at Caria, the Temple of Diane, the Statue of Jupiter, and ... morethe conical lighthouse of Alexandria. Shirley, The Mapping of the World, Entry 255) The map has decorative cartouches for the title, dedication and explanation, two spheres for the north and south poles, a compass roses and numerous ships and sea monsters. It appeared in the Blaeu Atlas from 1630 until 1658. The map was replaced by a two hemispheres world map prepared by Willem's son Joan from 1662 onwards. This beautiful map was embroidered on a brocade canvas and has a gold satin like back. The edges are ordered with a brown velvet and a gold brocade. There are 6 loops for a hanging rod which is not included. It measures 46.25" wide and 38.5" long. This does have some staining and could use a cleaning. I have not cleaned it because I am not sure how to safely do so. Due to the business of this design it is actually hard to see the discoloration. Especially when viewed from a short distance of three feet or more. The back does have damage and staining as shown. Still, this is a fantastic piece. for more great items! ~ 1897 PENNSYLVANIA WALL MAP ~ Offered here is an original 1897 railroad wall map of the State of Pennsylvania published by the Bureau of Railroads. The map measures approximately 57” x 37” and it features the routes of all of the railroads that operated in the state during that time including the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Philadelphia Reading, the Lehigh Valley, the Baltimore and Ohio, the Beech Creek, and the Dunkirk and Allegheny. There are some tape stains where the seams were reinforced and some seam splits. Overall though. The map is still in pretty solid condition and would look wonderful displayed in a period frame.
