Vintage London Underground Map 1939 - Rare Scheger Version (Not HC Beck)
This rare edition of the London Underground Pocket map. Printed in 1938 and designed by Hans‘Zero’ Scheger, is one of the rarest around. Printed for just 1 year(until 1940) this map represents an extraordinary moment in the history of the London Underground. Unbeknown to the designer of the iconic schematic map. Harry Beck, it must have been a shock to him as he apparently was not aware that someone else had been requested to design the map for that year. In a quote from a letter to the Publicity Officer in June 1938, taken from the book"Beck's Underground Map" he had written: I have just happened to see a proof of a new Underground folder. The'H.C.Beck' diagram has been used. But with considerable and, I suggest, undesirable, alterations by another artist- one not on the staff- without reference to me. This map looks ... morelike it has been printed yesterday. Not at the start of WWII. A rare piece of history in perfect condition. As can be seen. The design uses a technique, by means of a coloured background, to highlight the central area(not unlike the technique used on today's map to show the tariff zones) The lines are not as wide as Beck's design and the interchange stations are illustrated by black circles, a feature that was returned to after Beck's last map in 1960. The intention, on this map, had been to eliminate the need for the peculiar interchange map that had been appearing on the back of the maps since 1935. This map is available to anyone in the world.

Vintage London Underground Map 1919 – Original *RARE*

Folds down to pocket size. Just 10 years after the original unified map of the London Underground. This was the first map produced following the end of the First World War. This map is the first to use the Johnston typeface, used by London Transport to this day(see below) Maps produced in the earlier years of the war were subjected to certain economies in the way of paper quality and style. The materials and expertise required to print in colour were not readily available and so the maps had been very limited in this regard. This map features a full reintroduction of the use of different colours to signify the different company lines. But unlike most examples ... moreof the 1919 map, this example has a Black and White front cover and thinner paper; an economy then, but making this map extremely rare edition of the map today. What makes this map most significant in the history of the underground is the first use of the famous"Johnston" typeface, commissioned by the Underground Group and designed by calligrapher Edward Johnston. This font is still used today, across all London Transport branding. The cover of the map includes a new update of the'bullseye' logo using the new typeface; however the remaining part of the cover still retains the old typeface. Vintage London Underground Map 1946 - HC Beck *Excellent Condition*
A lovely example of this post-war London Underground map 1946 by HC Beck. Who at this stage had adopted a new'rectilinear' approach, seeing most of the lines run North-South with just a few diagonal exceptions. Beck was encouraged by the management to revise his design in order to reduce the diagonal lines to an absolute minimum. Beck observed'I have rather tended to work on the assumption that elimination of unnecessary bends in the lines has made the diagram progressively easier to use' The picture is nicely divided by a cross formed horizontally through the centre by the Central Line and vertically by the Northern Line. One downside to this design was that the last station, on the Richmond branch of the District Line, is not shown adjacent to the river where it correctly belonged; this was not rectified until 1951. Since ... more1939. Lord Ashfield(LT Chairman) had insisted that station names should appear labelled in the colour of the lines, seeing duplication(or in some cases triplication) of the station names. To Becks delight, officials finally agreed that he could do away with the duplication of station names for different lines. This 1946 map is the first version to return to single station names, labelled in black. And so it has been every since. This map sees a garish border on the front cover designed by Captain Shepard. This only lasted a year making this a rare map indeed. This map is a fine addition to a collection or an ideal framed gift. As with all my maps. I am making it available to anyone in the world.

After the Dunkirk Evacuation at the end of May 1940. The threat of invasion was now very real. The Second World War had come to the Home Front. The military turned to their maps of Great Britain- produced by the Ordnance Survey- to find them woefully outdated and inadequate. Ordnance Survey immediately dropped work on the and began an intensive programme of updating the military’s sheets. Before 1940. The military’s maps of England& Wales had the unmemorable series title‘GSGS 3907’ and of Scotland‘GSGS 3908’ These were based on the sheet ... morelines and mapping of the and. 1932 Vintage London Underground Map (Stingemore) - Last 'Geographical' map
Map of London's Underground Railways" Final edition of Fred Stingemore's design 1932. Last'Geographic' Map. In excellent condition. No marks, tears or foxing. In late 1932. Harry Beck's iconic'electric circuit' diagram was adopted by LPTB(distributed in January 1933) Meaning this map, which was printed earlier in 1932, was one of the last edition of the Underground map in Geographical format ever made. This lovely pocket map was the last of a generation of Stingemore pocket maps which saw a series of editions from 1925 to 1932. The Stingemore maps were the last ever to be printed on robust linen-backed card. With all future maps on normal card or paper. Therefore this example has survived in remarkable condition. Over the period the Stingemore design was used, a number of key design features were introduced. ... moreNotably, later editions of this map saw the station names printed in the same colour as the lines. F.H. Stingemore had designed posters for the Underground since 1914. Several of which had included cartographic elements, so he was asked to tackle the 1925 edition of the map. It built on Macdonald Gill's background-less idea but reintroduced the Thames for orientation. Stingemore's lettering was a step in the right direction for clarity. Hand drawn rather than printed in Johnson Sans, but Stingemore seems to have at least learnt the trick of not allowing the text to slip over onto the coloured route lines.
