What To See& How To Travel– Map of The Electric Railways of London' Featuring the British Empire Exhibition of 1924(Wembley) Size: 17 1/2" 45cm) by 14 1/2" 37cm) Original Macdonald Gill publications are highly collectable and sought after. This is an extremely rare and desirable map and is in good condition. A fabulously preserved item produced 90 years ago. When the British Empire was at its peak. This particular map is larger than most Underground pocket maps of the time so would look fantastic on the wall in a frame. Macdonald Gill was an extraordinary cartographer. Artist and calligrapher who brought colour and art to the London Underground from 1914 onwards. is extradorj His extraordinary‘Wonderground Map of London’ station posters captured the imagination of ... morecommuters. It was six years later in 1920 that he produced his first pocket map of the Underground. The Macdonald Gill design was used for a short period(1920-1924) and saw 4 editions. This map is the 4th and final edition. With its distinctive red border and red'snipes' highlighting stations for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 Macdonald Gill’s pioneering design did away with all of the background detail that had been included in most of the previous designs. By this stage. A number of the lines were shown in colours that still remain today. The decorative border and calligraphy for the names of the stations and other text were typical of Macdonald Gill’s fusion of cartography and design. This produced an attractive and very individual style that made a major new step towards simplifying the understanding of the underground network. This map is a lovely piece of British history as well as art history. Condition: In Good condition. No foxing or major damage. A couple of small holes at the fold intersections and minor tears at the some of the fold edge. Available to anyone in the world.

1928 Original Vintage London Underground map- Designed by EG Perman. Printed by Waterlow& Sons. Excellent Condition. Beautiful example with no tears or foxing. Framed(20" x 16" with custom mount. Also available unframed for £169. This rare London Underground map. Printed for just one year in 1928, is one of the most attractive and decorative Underground maps ever printed. Notably, This was the only Underground map printed in portrait orientation and was the last of the'decorative era' Macdonald Gill can be largely credited for the beautiful decorative style of 1920's London Underground maps, who used calligraphy and decorative borders on his maps from 1920-1924. From 1925, the decorative approach was lost in favour of the clean and functional(some would say easier to read) Stingemore design, seeing the Johnson ... morefont replacing calligraphy and function favoured over style. It was therefore surprising that this alternative design by EG Perman ever made it into print- but thank goodness it did. In stark contrast to the Stingemore Underground map of the day, Perman has brought a new beauty and wonder to London by using the flowing lines of the Underground to connecting the cities most popular sights. Clearly inspired by Macdonald Gill, this design takes it one step further with beautiful calligraphy, flamboyant borders and lovely pictures to denote London's most popular sites. As with all Underground map designs before 1933. This map is geographically accurate with a high level of background detail. To handle the far reaching lines east and west, the lines are simply ended early with labels advising where else they go. This was the only way the Underground could be mapped while keeping the densely packed central area readable. Color 14" x 11" MAP OF THE ELECTRIC RAILWAYS OF LONDON WHAT TO SEE& HOW TO TRAVEL After a break of approximately two years. Probably due to hostilities, this was the first map produced, following the end of the First World War. Maps produced in the earlier years of the war were subjected to certain economies in the way of paper quality and style. The materials and expertise required to print in color were not readily available and so the maps had been very limited in this regard. This map features a full reintroduction ... moreof the use of different colors to signify the different company lines. These. However, have not always been attributed as they were prior to 1914; the Piccadilly Line, which had been in yellow for example, appears in blue. The Inner Circle has been given its own identity for the first time and is shown in hatched green. The scheme deployed on this map has, essentially, been retained and will be familiar to today's underground traveller. The map features the first use of the famous"Johnston" typeface. Commissioned by the Underground Group and designed by calligrapher Edward Johnston. This is the well known style that is still used by London Transport today. The cover of the map. Shown here(not included) includes a new update of the'bullseye' logo using the new typeface; however the remaining part of the cover still retains the old typeface, which makes a poor contrast against the new. London Underground Map You Can’t Beat The System Vintage MUG 1985
This is a vintage Kiln Craft Staffordshire Tableware Ceramic Mug from England. The 1985 mug features the London Regional Transport map of the London Underground. The souvenir mug is in nice used/not abused condition with no chips. Cracks or noticeable damage. The interior base of the mug is slightly uneven and gives the faint appearance of being dirty, which it isn’t, but the bumps catch the light at different angles. Vintage Long View of London from Bankside Map Poster 8ft
This is a are find. This is a print of the Long View of London from Bankside. It is a panoramic etching made by Wenceslas Hollar in Antwerp in 1647. It depicts a panorama of London. Based on drawings done while Hollar was in London in the early 1640s. Unlike earlier panoramas of London, Hollar's panorama takes a single viewpoint, the tower of St Saviour in Southwark(now Southwark Cathedral) from where he made the drawings. It shows the River Thames curving sinuously from left to right past the viewpoint. I had a map expert look at this print and he said it was vintage due to heavy paper it is printed on and it is spliced together so it was printed before the regular use of continue roll paper. It is in good condition for it's age. It does have slight discoloration due to age to the paper but it gives it a great patina. There are no ... morerips in the print. It is a very long print at 8 feet! It is 22" wide. It is marked with The British Museum. I have done quite a bit of research and can not find anything like this so I know it is a rare treasure! Up for auction a Old London map of St. Paul's cathedral(original) plans 1700's? This is a old plans of st Paul's Cathedral. It's hand drawn. Lettered and coloured and some added written plans on that was added later. It's on tracing paper that has been put on a hard-ish cloth like sheet.I'm guessing at a later date to preserve it longer. I measured just the original tracing paper, it's 1030mm long by 630mm width(This is not a copy or print) I am NO expert in old maps and plans. So I hope the photos are ok and you can see what you need to. It's in good condition, it is dirty from years of dust but only at one end as you can see in the photos. The map has a paper wrapping that protected It,it was rolled up and the dust just fell thought the gap in the middle of the tube of the map. Two little rips.One in the ... moretop right of the map,the other is middle left on the edge, as you can see in the photos. I haven't tried to clean this and will leave it up to the buyer to do so. I'm not sure how old this is but When I got this I got some other maps with it, I've got one of London meat market and North side of the embankment on The Thames river which is dated A.D. MDCCLXVII(1767) in the reign of King George the third. And some other ones. So I'm only getting my dates from the other maps. guessing this is just as old as they are or older. London Underground map no. 1, 1939. Hans Schleger designed. Vintage Tube map.
Original 1939 London Underground map No. 1 This is the design with the Hans Schleger changes that so annoyed Harry Beck Harry Beck’s 1932 reworking of the London Underground map from the fairly traditional cartographic style in which it had previously been drawn to the diagrammatic style which we still use today. Is now regarded as one of the design masterpieces of the twentieth century. At the time there was doubt whether something so unconventional would be accepted by the travelling public. In fact, Beck’s map was very well received by Tube passengers because of its clarity and practicality. Apart from modifiying the design of the station symbols for the“second edition” in 1936(and obviously. Adding new stations as they were opened) Beck left the orginal design unchanged for the next seven years. In 1938 London Underground commissioned ... morethe German designer. Hans Schleger(Zero” to tweak the appearance of Beck’s map for a new edition. Schleger was a respected graphic artist who produced some fabulous posters for the Tube. Beck however. Was pretty miffed by the involvement of another designer– not least because no-one had actually told him that this was happening. He complained vigorously to the London Transport Publicity Office. Which was responsible for production of the map. In fact. Schleger changed very little of Beck’s design. He coloured the background to highlight the central area and used heavier circles to indicate the interchange stations but most other features remained pretty much the the same. In 1940. Beck was given back the responsibility for updating the design and, apart from another hiccup in 1946, he held on to the job until 1960. This is- I think- the first edition of Schleger’s map. It is the first of three editions of it printed in 1939. Th is example is in pretty good condition. Like most surviving Tube maps of the period it is a bit grubby and has started to give out at the top and bottom of the folds but it is largely tidy. It comes in a hardback cloth binding and a statistic in one of the advertisements dates it to around 1913. Closed and folded it is 3 3/4" by 2 1/2" and it opens out to 12" by 10" To the reverse it features some fascinating period advertisements. Clearly little used and well stored for many years, it is in great condition- the cover has slight wear and discoloration. It would be a great addition to any collection of vintage maps. Vintage Original London Underground Pocket Map 1938- Tri-fold Pocket map printed on card. Published by London Transport, printed by Johnson Riddle. MINT Condition: No tears. Marks or foxing. I believe this map has never been used and potentially never even opened since it was printed 76 years ago. For sale is a beautiful example of an early London Underground map designed by HC Beck. Harry Beck's iconic'circuit' design had only been adopted 5 years prior to this edition. Which sees little change from the original 1933 design, complete with blue border. From 1936, the pocket map saw the addition of the Inter-change station diagram on the rear of the map from 1936. This interchange diagram was considered by many passengers at the time as baffling and was therefore subsequently removed from all future editions from 1938, making this ... morethe last edition to have this diagram. Up for auction is this vintage London road map. It is entitled"The Up-to-Date Road Map 30 Miles About London. It was published by Geographia. Ltd of London, Britain UK. This map was from my father's estate. He served in the US Army during WWII and was stationed in England, preparing for the D-Day invasion. Although there is no date on the map, it would have to have been published in the late 1930s to early 1940s- certainly before 1944. Folded. The map cover measures 6 1/2" x 4" Unfolded, it measures 22" x 17 1/4" There are n o tears or marks on map. Corners of cover show some curling. Some marks on front cover as pictured.
