John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. Up for bid is this Attractive map of the country of Pembrokeshire in UK by J. Blaeu. From a Dutch edition of"Atlas Maior" in beautiful colour. With 13 coats of arms. One cartouche and two sailing ships. Dutch text on verso. Cartograph: Willem Janszoon Blaeu(1571- 1638) Title: Penbrochia Comitatus et Comitatus Caermaridunum Year: Amsterdam. Circa 1648 Frame Size: 19.25 x 24 inches Willem Janszoon Blaeu was born 1571 in Alkmaar. He was trained from 1594 to 1596 by the famous danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. 1599 he went to Amsterdam and founded a business as globe maker. Later he started producing map and sea charts. Including his first world map in 1605. In 1633 he was appointed Hydrographer for the Dutch East India Company(VOC) His most famous work was the"Atlas Novus" or"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus" ... moreof 1635, which was published until 1655 in total six volumes. And is titled"Weltkarte in Kegelprojektion" Westeuropa u. Atl Ozean" and measures a VERY LARGE 34" x 40" size. This map allowed the pilot to properly calculate his flight path. It is made heavy oil cloth. And is printed in a YELLOW tint for night flying and low light visibility. Made of yellow-tinted oil cloth. This map is in EXCELLENT condition for its age.
