Creighton and engraved by J.C. Walker as stated in small print in the bottom margin. It is from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of England. Also stated in the bottom margin. Published in London by Lewis& Co. 1831, a copy fo the volume IV title page is included. Overall a very nice map in great condition that would frame up nicely, printed on heavy paper with the copper plate marks embossed around the margins and blank on the reverse. The map is not matted nor framed, being sold as a single individual sheet as shown in the pic. Size: The map image area measures 7 by 9 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12 1/2" page with a wide margin all around. Condition: The print is in Very Good or better condition for its age. Blank on the reverse, in its original uncolored state as issued, basically as seen in the pic. Other than a couple of very minor spots around the margins, it is very clean on a bright page that would frame up nicely. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. Hello.This is a sale for a wonderful original( 2nd Edition) Ordnance Survey map of Ford and surrounding area. nr.Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England) and surrounding areas dated 1902.This map is printed on very heavy gauge paper and will last for many years.It`s ideal for wall mounting and measures a whopping 41" by 29"The detail is wonderful and of course shows the land and villages as they were before any significant development took place in the 20th century.I`ve described the condition earlier. Vintage 1940s/1950s UK Road Atlas - 3 inch to 1 Mile Road Map with Town Plans
Vintage 1940s or 1950s Road Atlas with Town Plans Here we have for auction an interesting snapshot of 1940s or early 1950s Britain. In the form of this faux leather bound Road Atlas, prior to any motorways being built, detailing routes to and from major destination along with mileages, and town plans for the UK's major towns and cities. The first motorway was built to by pass Preston in 1958. And there is no hint of it, so although I cannot find any reference to a date within the atlas, it certainly predates 1958. The Atlas is in good condition for its age- it was one of those inexpensive items that was meant to have been thrown away, so for it to survive is unusual, but gives us an excellent snapshot of what Britain was like to drive around over 60 years ago. No M25, or M1, M6 etc- the main route from London to Manchester takes in the ... moreRoman Watling Street, Fosse Way and across the A6, taking in St Albans, Fenny Stratford, Market Harborough, Leicester, Derby, Buxton and Stockport en route- interestingly, a shorter route than now, but would have taken at least two or three times as long! 1950 Original Print Map Bermuda Somers Islands UK Nautical Quo Fata Ferunt OLD
Hello. And thanks for checking out the auction! This item is an original 1950s vintage Print of Bermuda or the Somers Islands/Isles. Still in it's original frame. The print measures 27" x 20-1/2" with a 1-3/4" frame. This print has been in my family since I was a kid, and I'm over 50. We're redecorating now and this colorful Historical and Nautical print deserves a new home. The map has all kinds of interesting little features on it, including the Bermuda Coat of Arms, and the motto"Quo Fata Ferunt" Whither the Fates Carry(US) figuring prominently at the lower center of the print. There is a full portion devoted to Nautical Flags, another with ships dating back to the discovery of the Isles and planes up to 1946, and even the"E Pluribus Unum" seal of the US on it, for some reason. No mention ... moreof the United Kingdom. It is a wonderfully detailed map that you will find something new on every time that you look at it. The frame is nondescript blond oak. And might look better and older with a little darkening. The paper backing is probably more delicate than the Declaration of Independence at this point, and may not survive packing and shipping, and I took a picture to illustrate this. It still has the name of the original gallery on it, too. This is a great piece of history which still is something special to look at. No matter what your age. It's thick textured paper pages remain untorn and without any seam splits. There is obvious discolouration on the front and reverse with some perimeter creasing and light fraying. Inside the pages are lightly discoloured but there are again. No splits. The folded booklet measures 12cm or almost 5 inches width and 25.5cm or 10 inches height.
