1572 Map Lille France Genuine Antique Old Braun Hogenberg Vintage Town Plan
A detailed Town Plan of Lille in France. From the earliest atlas of such Town Plans first published in 1572(with editions to 1618) by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg. The Atlas was titled"Civitates Orbis Terrarum" a volume of huge importance. The towns are displayed in great detail(as they were nearly 450 years ago) with individual buildings depicted. Moreover each map contains figures in the foreground, which tell us a lot about current clothing and fashion in that area. This is a fine example of such a map of an important French town. With all the familiar details: the figures in the foreground, the florid key bottom left, the 2 coats-of-arms, and the lovely handcolouring that is a feature of these early plans, with the gold on this one being highlighted. No expense has been spared. Size: 53.5cms x 41cms. Condition: Margins slightly ... morebrowned. 2 stains visible front and back towards the top right hand corner of the map. One more visible than the other(see photos) Otherwise in very good condition with attractive original handcolouring. A fine example of one of the earliest printed maps available to the collector. Wenceslaus Hollar(1607- 1677) Coventry is indeed fortunate to have so fine and early a panorama of the city from 2 vantage points, together with an intricate birds-eye town plan with details of buildings, gardens, etc. all done by such a fine craftsman. The work was done for a most important book on the county, Dugdale's"Warwickshire" first published in 1656. Hollar did much of the engraving for this volume. In black& white as issued. As the American Architect and Building News not only had a very small circulation during that time, but very few were actually preserved or colored as this has been. It measures 13 by 8.75 inches.
