A lovely hand-coloured example of John Tallis’ plan of the city. Very detailed. The plan is surrounded by coloured vignettes of important buildings. And an ornate border. The sheet is untrimmed and measures approx 51cm x 37cm; vertical centrefold as issued with remnants of binding material on the verso. Condition is good. But there is some edge damage. The impression is clear and sharp; evenly toned; the colouring is old and has been done conscientiously. Very high decorative value. Some creasing, but nothing that really distracts. The edge has some bumping and small chips; there are a few tears, the most noticeable running diagonally from the bottom edge just to the right of the central imprint, and just touching the decorative border(repaired with tape on verso) there is another on the right edge that again just reaches the border. There ... moreis a brown mounting box line the whole way round, and the paper outside this is browner. The verso is more noticeably browner and there are remnants of mounting tape plus small pieces of tape top and bottom of the centrefold. Hopefully all the issues are illustrated in the images below. I’ll post it flat supported by some light hardboard. First class postage in the UK is £3.00 plus 70p for packaging. From Nicaragua to Panama, with two vignette views, printed more than 162 years ago. This map delineates the proposed railway across the Isthmus of Panama. This railroad was opened in 1855. Four years after this map was printed, providing the infrastructure that would determine the location of the future canal, which began construction in 1880. The map also shows a proposed road across Veragua from Lake Chiriqui to the Pacific Ocean at Bágala. And it locates the proposed canal connecting Lake Nicaragua with Greytown via the Mosquito and San Juan Rivers. A handsome vignette at the upper right shows the fort at Chagre. In the lower left. Tallis was renowned for the very accurate and visually most attractive maps and views of all world areas during the Victorian Age. His star engraver and map maker was John Rapkin. During the mid 19th Century many books of travel and exploration were published by Tallis, using the extraordinary artistic and engraving skills of John Rapkin. Beginning in 1851, John Tallis& Co. issued their Illustrated Atlas, which contained maps of all parts of the world. These detailed maps are particularly prized for their decorative borders and the small finely engraved vignettes of indigenous scenes, people, etc. Generally regarded as the most decorative mid 19th Century Atlas map of its type. With four handsome vignette views, printed more than 162 years ago. The image area measures 34.5 x 24.5 cm[13-1/2" x 9-1/2" And the map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. It was published by John Tallis& Company, London and New York in 1851 and is titled in the upper center of the scrollwork border: British Guyana. The vignette illustrations were drawn and engraved by Henry Winkles and include views of Ataraipu. Or the Devil's Rock; Christmas Cataract, River Berbice; New Amsterdam; and Georgetown, capital of the colony. There is also a small circular illustration of a sailing ship. Nice vignettes and a centerfold as issued. The map is well documented with the name of the cartographer stated in the bottom right margin: The Map, Drawn and Engraved by J. Rapkin; the publisher's name is in the bottom center: John Tallis& Company: London& New York; and, in the bottom left is the name of the illustrater and engraver of the vignettes. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as seen in the main pic, photographed ... moreagainst a dark background. Overall, a very nice rare example, printed on a heavy page, blank on the reverse with the classic decorative border and vignettes that Tallis is well know. Size: The image area measures 8 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches(22x30cm) within the neat lines and the entire page measures 10 1/2 by 14(27x35cm) as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Very Good condition printed on a light buff page with a centerfold as issued. Blank on the reverse. Other than some light handling around the edges, it is very clean and would frame up nicely, see pics for more on condition. Pics are of the actual map.
