The John Tallis company were prominent publishers in the mid-nineteenth century but are best known for producing"the last ... moregreat decorative world atlas" when they issued'The Illustrated Atlas' in 1851. All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein. Tallis and Co. were London map publishers who traded under various names: L. Tallis. Tallis& co, John Tallis, John Tallis& co. London& New York) between 1838 and 1851: after 1850-51 their maps were published by the London Printing and Publishing Co. London and New York. In 1849 Tallis& co. published the Illustrated Atlas of the World with the maps and decorative vignette’s engraved and drawn by J. Rapkin. This atlas was one of the last atlases to be truly decorated and is therefore is highly desirable. The map measures 9.5" by 13.5" Plus the 2" matting on all sides. Good condition. An original antique town plan of PRESTON by Tallis& Rapkin. The plan is steel engraved. Hand coloured and highly decorative and features seven vignettes of scenes in the town(e.g St Peter's Church, the Grammar School, the River Ribble and railway viaducts from Avenham Park) Unframed and unmounted, the plan shows Preston at the height of the industrial revolution, when the town was already an important rail hub. Also of interest is the tramway which links the Leeds-Liverpool canal to the south of the town, with the Lancaster canal in the town centre. Tallis's town plan are relatively uncommon. Up for auction is a tallis and pouch. The tallis measures roughly 75 x 54 inches( large tallis) and it is in excellent. New condition. There are no tags, but it does not look like it has ever been worn- it utilizes black for the stripes. It is made out of wool- The tzitzit all look fine. The corners and neck band are silk. 1851 Tallis Map- Western Australia. Swan River' The John Tallis company were prominent publishers in the mid-nineteenth century but are best known for producing"the last great decorative world atlas" when they issued'The Illustrated Atlas' in 1851. All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein. This map comes from'The Illustrated Atlas' This steel engraving is typical of the decorative nature of Tallis maps. The map shows the regions. And the towns of Perth, Albany, Bunbury, and Fremantle. The map has fine detail to the landscape. There are six attractive vignettes: Perth, From Mount Eliza' Aborigines' Sheep Shearing' Between Perth and Fremantle' sheep herding, ... moreand a view of ships. Mexican peasants and the ancient ruins in the Yucatan. Shows Texas but not Arkansas or Arizona territory. In fair overall condition with a small chip in the upper left corner and the lower edge. With a very tiny chip in the upper right corner. With 3 one inch closed tears on the edges but the central map itself is in VG condition with no tears or holes and is highly detailed showing tributaries of rivers and exact locations of gold deposits. Measures 14" X 10 1/4" Hand colored in outline. Shows all of South America from Central America down to Tierra Del Fuego. Shows all the rivers and tributaries and mountain ranges with the names of the towns and villages. With engravings of scenes and animals including the great condor, the llama, a Brazilian bridge of ropes, washing gold in Brazil, natives of Chili etc. With an ornate border. In fair condition with two chips on the left and right edges where the fold line is located. With 2" separations on the right and left edges of the fold line.
