It features vignettes of Plymouth Sound, the Column, the waterfront and an ornate border. The plan is unframed and unmounted and measures approximately 350x240mm. Prominent on the map are the dockyards, the Citadel and the early rail network. Tallis's town plan are relatively uncommon. Apart from trimming with some small loss to the decorative left and right borders, the map is in very good condition.

1855 Very Decorative Tallis Map- Modern Palestine The John Tallis company were prominent publishers in the mid-nineteenth century but are best known for producing"the last great decorative world atlas" when they issued'The Illustrated Atlas' in 1851. All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein. The maps were later included in folded form in Wright's"Universal Pronouncing Dictionary" This map is from that publication. Up for auction is a lot of 11 assorted tallis’ Some( 4) are made out of wool. Here is a basic description. 2 of them are large wool tallis’ one measures 70 x 60 and the other one measures 68 x 58- these are LARGE tallis. They both utilize black for the stripes. 2 are identical. Small( but long) wool tallis’ they both measure 62 x 13. Again. Fairly long, but small. They both utilize black for the stripes. 3 tallis’ utilize blue and silver for the stripes. One measures 64 x 18- one measures 71 x 16- one measures 69 x 19. 2 tallis’ utilize only blue for the stripes. One measures 68 x 26- one measures 66 x 16 2 tallis’ are identical and utilize black for the stripes. They both measure 66 x 22. Total of 11 tallis’ They are all used. And range from good to very good to excellent condition. These are NOT disgusting old. Used, smelly tallis’ They ... moreare actually in pretty good condition. Some of them have faint stains or wear spots. But nothing major at all. There is one Tallis that has a half dollar sized spot stain on it but otherwise that is the worst of them. One of the Large wool tallis’ has a couple of tiny wear spots in the material( nothing major) The neck band on one of the Large ones appears to have had a decoration that is no longer there. The neck band is still there. Just not the decoration. The most important thing is that all of the tzitzit on all 11 tallis’ look good- or better yet- look excellent. Again. These are clean, used tallis’ They do show some spot staining- but not all of them- some are in excellent condition. Some are in good to very good condition. All of them are still useable. This would be the perfect time to stock up on some tallis’ Weather it be for home or shule or even perhaps a stage production or play. With 10 small engravings of scenes by J. Marcham and with the cartography by J. Rapkin. Even though it doesn't state John Tallis as the publisher I found it with other John Tallis(London) maps of exactly the same size and with the same type of engravings and colored in outline. The map shows Texas. Missouri territory, Western territory, California with Port San Francisco. In VG+ condition with very tiny chips in the corners and NO soiling. Stains or marks. No owners or library marks or stamps. At the fold line on the right and left edges it's separated about 3/4" No holes or tears in the map itself. Great example of the classic John Tallis& Company 1851 map of the United States. This is the only example I have seen of this map that was originally frame mounted and not removed from an old atlas. Never folded. Marked on border edges. John Tallis& Company, London& New York. Illustrations by J. Marchant& Engraved by J. Rogers. The Map Drawn& Engraved by J. Rapkin. Hard paper board is 15 7/8 X11 7/8. Printed surface is 13 1/2 X10 1/2 inches. Heavy paper board is 1/8 inch thick in good condition. The individually drawn lines separating areas differ somewhat from map to map; notice on this one that the line dividing the U.S. and"British America" follow the 49th parallel except in the Pacific Northwest where it dips down just below Fort Vancouver(today's Vancouver. Wash. so the British can claim Puget Sound. The treaty establishing the boundary was signed in 1846 but map makers were often years behind. Mexico extends well into today's United States.
