All of the maps had several lovely vignette scenes showing important places and activities. The style was so popular that later editions of the atlas included city plans in a similar vein. Tallis and Co. were London map publishers who traded under various names: L. Tallis. Tallis& co, John Tallis, John Tallis& co. London& New York) between 1838 and 1851: after 1850-51 their maps were published by the London Printing and Publishing Co. London and New York. In 1849 Tallis& co. published the Illustrated Atlas of the World with the maps and decorative vignette’s engraved and drawn by J. Rapkin. This atlas was one of the last atlases to be truly decorated and is therefore is highly desirable. The map measures 9.5" by 13.5" Plus the 2" matting on all sides. Good condition. This year also marked the beginning of the Australian gold rush, which would attract a large number of international immigrants, tripling its population within the next 20 years.
