Scotland, known as"cairngorm" and since ancient times has been a favorite ornamental gemstone. Smoky quartz was very popular with the ancient Romans, who often used the stone for carving intaglio seals. Cairngorm is also ... morethe national gemstone of Scotland and has been considered a sacred stone for millennia, a belief dating back to the Druids. For centuries Smoky Quartz has also been commonly set into the pommel of the Scottish dirk, or“black dagger” a long dagger with a straight blade that is a prerequisite of Highland costume. Here are two richly colored, antique, hand faceted, very uncommon semi-precious gemstones from Victorian-era Scotland, specifically Mount Cairngorm. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, these gemstones are known either as“Smoky” or“Cairngorm” Quartz. Generally“crystal” clear, the smoky tone is caused by the natural radiation emanating from granite stone the quartz is exposed to while buried in the earth. These are two very handsome gemstones, completely transparent, with beautiful sparkle and luster. They are exceptionally clean, water clear, and possess gorgeous smoky brown color. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into somewhat coarse briolettes, an old fashioned cut reflecting their heritage, by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of M

DETAIL: A handsome. ... moreNicely constructed Roman bronze ring with understated but very elegant features. The ring sports a large bezel which at one time held a gemstone, probably originally carnelian(orange colored quartz) However it is not possible to determine the type of gemstone the ring originally possessed as it was recovered without a gemstone. The ring possesses a large oval concave bezel which forms a“cup” for an oval gemstone. The ring is relatively light in construction, of one-piece construction much like a contemporary ring. The more archaic rings produced by Roman artisans were characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This ring has almost modern styling, the design literally“timeless” The ring was a more“upscale” model. You might note several“upgrade” features including ribbed bands and an engraved vertical boundary line in a sense defines the bezel apart from the bands, a rather unusual touch. The ribbed bands are also quite uncommon for the era. The ring is still within the realm of something you might find on

Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. 18thC Antique 1¼ct Scotland Amethyst Ancient Medieval Shaman Prophecy Visions
Large One and One-Quarter Carat 18th Century Handcrafted Antique Genuine Natural Amethyst Oval. Handcrafted oval cut cabochon is of 18th century origin sourced from the Devonian lava beds on the coast of Scotland near Angus. Handcrafted by a Russian artisan for domestic jewelry. Length: 8mm. Width: 6mm. Thickness: 3mm. Weight: 1.28 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) Shamans of the ancient and medieval world used amethyst to assist prophecy and visions. Amethyst was also used in spells designed to magnify beauty. In Renaissance magic. An amethyst engraved with the image of a bear was worn as a protective amulet, and had the power to put demons to flight. Most ancient Mediterranean cultures, including the ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians and Celts believed that ... moreamethyst protect soldiers from harm in battle. Extremely popular in 18th and 19th century Scotland, amethyst retained its popularity through the 20th century. Handcrafted and shaped in the 18th century, this large and colorful amethyst comes from the Devonian lava beds near the coast of Angus County, Scotland. Much finer than the images here suggest, it is a lovely cabochon oval cut, gorgeous, vibrant and richly hued, the pride of a 18th century Russian artisan. A nice quality gemstone in its times, it is more or less transparent but by no means flawless. Though generous in size, it is not a high quality amethyst by today's standards, though it is historically significant. Purple has always been associated with royalty and amethyst is no exception. It was popular with all of Europe's royalty during Renaissance and Victorian times. When seen under magnification. The coarseness of the finish of this 18th century amethyst tells us that it is obviously hand crafted. Rather than detracting from its value or allure, this is considered appealing to most collectors, who consider examples like this to be more desirable than today’s computer-controlled machine-produced gemstones.
Rare Large Antique 1893 Bacon's Folio Atlas Map of Central SCOTLAND
A fine original 19th century antique map from G.W. Bacon. This listing: Scotland(Central) Provenance Commercial and Library Atlas of the World. Containing one hundred inset maps. Including all the latest discoveries, Extensive letterpress descriptions, Alphabetical index, Populations from the latest censuses, Gazetteer of 2,000 principal towns, Statistical diagrams and tables, etc. Edited by G.W. Bacon. F.R.G.S. Publisher London: G.W. Bacon& Co. Limited, 127 Strand. 1893. The maps for sale here are all at least 115 years old. I removed them from the damaged atlas myself. Size/ Format In millimeters(and inches) Sheet: 540 x 345(21 x 13½) Map: 480 X 300(18¾ x 11¾) These maps were all'tipped in' to the atlas. Meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. There is a fold in the centre of each map. The ... moremaps are lithographs on heavy paper. The colors and still bright and fresh. The margins are generous. Condition The overall condition of the maps is very good/ excellent. There is the occasional spot in the margins of a few of the maps. And the occasional minor tear(always completely confined to the margins) has been professionally repaired. The photos included in the listings are of the actual maps you will receive, Remarks This atlas is relatively scarce. I was only able to find three rather pricey examples available online. A fourth is in the custody of the UK National Archives. Many of the maps that appeared in this atlas were originally published by Bacon in the 1860s as the highly sought after Weekly Dispatch series of maps. These maps are unusually rectangular with a length to width ratio of 1: 1.56. Which was, and is, unusual. The double maps are somewhat longer or'taller' than usual when vertical, and somewhat longer'wider' than usual when horizontal. This Commercial and Library Atlas offers a refreshing change from Bartholomew's widely adopted treatment of the world's geography with pleasant surprises like Tasmania occupying a full double page m

Vintage Antique Metal Scotland Scottish Thistle Double Candle Holder Wall Sconce
This is a lovely wall sconce that holds two candles. The design has four Scottish thistles in the center and scrolls out on each side to hold a candle or small votive cup. The candle stick bottom part looks like a torch. Reminiscent of the torch the Statue of Liberty holds. I believe that this is painted wrought iron or other heavy metal. Areas of wear to the paint in spots. Could easily be cleaned up and spray painted a color to match your décor. The sconce measures approximately 10.5 inches across and about 6.5 inches top to bottom overall. The thistle decoration measures approximately 6 inches in diameter. The diameter of the area where the candle goes is about 1-1/4 inches. There are three holes in the center to affix to your wall. Would look lovely inside your home or outside on a wall in your garden or patio. Needs a good clean. ... moreRare and hard to find. Found in Great Britain and brought here by me. Shipping is $10. SCOTTISH SILVER Antique & Contemporary Aberdeen Art Gallery Scotland Silversmith
Silver from Scotland” By George Daigliesh. Et al. Published by the Aberdeen Art Gallery& Museums. And the Scottish Gallery in 1997. DISCUSSION: An exhibition which featured both antique and contemporary pieces. With notes on the contemporary silversmiths and several sort accompanying essays. The ratio of antique to modern silver is about 1/3 antique and 2/3 modern. The text pages are printed on semi-opaque paper which allows you to(sort of) see the illustrated page the text discusses. This probably sounded better when they were designing the catalog than it works out in practice, where it can be a bit annoying at times, but what are we to do? DESCRIPTION: Wire bound. 5”x8.5” 106 pages, black& white illustrations. Contained in a cardboard case. CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear. But otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding.
