1879, SCOTLAND by J Bartholomew, Antique Atlas Map
An attractive general map of the country on heavy paper. Published in the International Atlas and Geography. Scale 20 miles to the inch. The margins are lightly toned with some minor spotting and the right margin is creased and a bit raggedy where originally bound. Verso completely blank and clean; a few foxing spots. The map will be posted rolled in a wide-diameter tube. First class postage in the UK is £2.70 plus £1.00 for the tube. I am delighted to combine postage for multiple buys. DETAIL: Cairngorm. Or“Smoky Quartz” is the national gemstone of Scotland and has been considered a sacred stone for millennia, a belief dating back to the Druids. Ancient cultures attributed many mystical properties to quartz crystals. They were particularly used in sorcery, magic, and witchcraft in part due to the"secret magical powers" evidenced by the weak electrical charge quartz crystals carry. For centuries Smoky Quartz has also been commonly set into the pommel of the Scottish dirk, or“black dagger” a long dagger with a straight blade that is a prerequisite of Highland costume. The setting is of contemporary origin. It is a high quality setting manufactured by one of the USA’s leading semi-custom mount producers. It is constructed of solid sterling silver, and can be reset into 14kt gold if requested. The default chain is silver electroplated 24 inch. However we do have solid sterling silver(as well as 14kt gold and gold fill) chains available in lengths between 16 and 24 inches available upon request. Here are two large, very clean, golden yellow citrines which originated in the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. ... moreThese are exquisite gemstones which are completely transparent, exceptionally clean, water clear, with beautiful sparkle and luster. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into these somewhat coarse briolettes, an old fashioned cut reflecting their heritage, by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. These are very beautiful and brightly hued citrine semi-precious gemstones which though as you can clearly see in these photo enlargements might not be absolutely flawless. They are eye clean. Under magnification the gemstones show the unmistakable characteristics of having been hand crafted. However the coarseness of the nineteenth century finish is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment, or detract from the value of a gemstone. These characteristics are not only expected of hand-finished gemstones, most serious collectors consider such gemstones more desirable, possessed of greater character and uniqueness when compared to today's cookie-cutter mass-produced machine-tumbled ge

The internal features very intricate and airy. It is quite unique; pastel pink-purple with metallic beige-pink swirls near the surface which almost look like they might be pyrite(fool's gold) Never seen an amethyst quite like it before, it's an attractive effect vaguely reminiscent of agate.
