But most sttractive, giving a detailed picture of the Country at the start of the 17th century. Allen editor of the American Agriculturist. The almanac is published by Saxton& Miles. 205 Broadway, New York. The booklet has paper wraps(covers) sewn with thread and measures 4-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches with 36 numbered pages. The text is well illustrated throughout including the seals of the 29 states(at that time) that accompany brief descriptions of each state. In addition to the twelve months of the zodiac. There are various articles related to farming and agriculture. There is a half-page illustration(wood engraving) of a black man riding on a team of oxen pulling a wagon with a sign Louisville Market. Under the title. Culture of Poor Sandy Soils in Kentucky is a tale ... moreof this older black man. Sambo, who has produced vegetables and meats bound for the market. He sings a song; Den goin' down to Loudeville. Long time ago, Where all de wagons chunky fill Stan' in a row; Crack! Crack! Crack! When asked by a fellow traveller about his full wagon. Sambo explains that his master allows him one day a week to tend his garden. The stranger offers to pay for the secret of his methods of producing huge carrots and fat luscious-looking poultry. Sambo replies with the last verse of his song; What now you ask de pound for coon? Long time ago. Ah, massa, cheap at picayune, Times be so low, Crack! Crack! Crack! Other agricultural articles include plans for a piggery. The best Cattle for a fertile country. The Arabian Horse, with an illustration, Hedges, berries, ice, and many more subjects. There is a two page table of the states with population and production of various grains and produce. The back page has ads for publications of Saxton and Miles. The almanac is complete. The covers are worn and soiled with turned corners and many small closed tears. There is however very little loss. The pages are quite readable with the paper being soft and strong

An original antique map of DERBYSHIRE( Derby shire Described by C Saxton Corrected and Amended with many Additons by P Lea) by Christopher Saxton and Philip Lea. Published in 1693. The map is based on Saxton's original plate of Derbyshire(1576) but was extensively re-worked by Lea. Compared to the original Saxton map. This edition has an inset plan of Derby, roads, coats-of-arms etc. There are also vignettes of local curiosities/features- the Tiding Well, the Cold Spring at Buxton and the Devil's Arse! Hogarth frame(540x460mm) and unmounted. This is a rare map which is hand-coloured and in very good condition. The frame is heavy(with some slight damage) and the item would be best posted out-of-frame. The map, which does not have verso text, is not laid(stuck) down. Saxton's map of Warwicksahire and Leicestershire 1576. Dimensions(HxW) 20" x 25" The print will be delivered rolled and in a 2" diameter cardboard tube with plastic ends for safe transit. The tube unfortunately bumps up the Royal Mail cost as it's dimensions class it as a medium parcel in spite of it weighing only 290 grams.

Cardigan comitatus pars olim dimetarum’ From the 1610 edition of Camden's Britannia. This edition is the second state. The title is in an elaborate cartouche top left with compass rose beneath it. Scale of distance bottom right. Watermarked paper. This series of maps were the first in which each county was deliniated on a separate sheet. They were prepared by William Kip and William Hole and were mainly based on those of Christopher Saxton and Norden. The first issue of these maps was in 1607 with Latin text on the back of the maps and as the paper on which they are printed is rather thin, the lettering sometimes shows through on to the front of the map. In the subsequent two editions of 1610 and 1637 the maps had no text on the back and plate numbers were added to many maps for the 1637 edition.
