Reduced and re-issued from the same map by Christopher Saxton published earlier in the late 16th century. William Camden was an historian who first published his Britannia, a description and history of Britain. In 1586. Written in Latin, the book contained only a general map of the country but had a wide circulation and eventually in 1607 an edition(the sixth) was published with a series of maps with Latin text on the reverse. Further editions in English were ... morepublished in 1610 and 1637 but without text. The maps. Mostly engraved by William Kip and William Hole, were based on those of Christopher Saxton, but six were copied from Norden. The map of Pembroke is by George Owen and the general maps of England/Wales, Scotland and Ireland were probably taken from Mercator. Kip reduced the size of each map for Britannia from the originals published by Christopher Saxton in 1579. Ref: Tooley; M&B) Please note all items auctioned are genuine. We do not sell reproductions. SAXTON'S 1577 Map of Lancashire, UK -- 1961 Reproduction by Taylowe Ltd.
As it is shown in the pictures above. This map of Lancashire measures about 23" x 18¼" but the edges have been folded back over a cardboard stiffener, so it's actually an inch or two larger in both directions. The decorative panel at the upper right is dated 1577 and states in Latin that it represents a true and complete depiction of the County of Lancaster, and the title at the lower center describes it as"Saxton's Map of Lancashire, 1577. The small print at the lower right, however, dates it to 1961 and credits Taylowe Limited as the printer. And the small print at the lower left says"British Museum. Maps. C.7.c.1" Suggesting it might possibly have been published by the British Museum as a souvenir reproduction of an item in its collection. It is in lightly worn and soiled condition. And the folded-over ... moreedges are stained with remnants of scotch tape. I get the impression it was once framed behind glass, but this is the way I found it, in fact it's been in my ownership in this condition for 30 years or more. If any of our pictures fail to show up. First try a right-click on the cross or fractured picture image, then a left-click on"Show Picture" you may have to try more than once) If that fails, please contact us and we can send pictures to you by e-mail or direct you to their websites. If you buy multiple items, and if it's feasible and cost-effective for us to ship the items together, we will gladly consider requests to combine shipping at a reduced cost. SAXTON OXFORDSHIRE c. 1607-1637, engr Wm Hole, Camden "Britannia" Oxoniensis map
Christopher Saxton& William Hole Oxoniensis comitatus. Vulgo Oxfordshyr Map of Oxfordshire 1607- 1637 Description Seventeenth century Oxfordshire map published in William Camden's Britannia atlas. London:1607-1637) Copperplate engraving by William Hole with original hand color. Christopher Saxton produced the first county maps of England. Hole's engraving of Saxton's Oxfordshire is the earliest printed map depicting solely the county of Oxfordshire. This double-page engraving is decorated with a shield representing the post-1603 Royal Coat of Arms of James l: a shield quartered. Depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Northern Ireland. The shield lies within the garter ... moreof the Order of the Garter. The ensemble called the Arms of the Order of the Garter. The garter bears the motto"Honi soit qui mal y pense" in gold lettering. Also engraved onto the map and colored in shades of red. Blue, green, and gold are the prominent cartouche for the title, the compass rose and cartouches for the key and the scale. The map itself is colored with red, blue, and green pigments, with parts shaded in pale washes of pink, yellow, and green. Hills and mountains are depicted with brown coloring, trees are colored green, and towns and villages and the city of Oxford are represented with dwellings pigmented red. One of the photos here displays the watermark found on this Stuart-period map. The photo of the watermark was made by holding the map up to the light. The map is engraved on laid paper measuring 13 x 13 1/2 inches. The paper is toned. Delicate, with original center binder's guard to prevent the engraved paper from attaching directly into the binding of the atlas. To verso of the lower 8.5" of the center join is an attached paper strip of unknown age to secure the integrity of the map left and right. Some roughness to the center fold at

1637 Kip Saxton Map Brecnoc Brecon Beacons Black Mountains Old Antique Hay Wales
Brecknoc comitatus pars olim Silurum.Christopher Saxton descripsit. Wilhelmus Kip Sculpsit. A county map of Breconshire. Taken from William Camden's"Britannia" first published in 1607, with later editions 1610 and 1637. The presence of a plate number"36" bottom left suggests that this example is from the 1637 edition. The map is by William Kip. But, unusually(there was much plagiarism in those days) he gives full credit to Christopher Saxton, on whose work this map is based. The series in Camden's"Britannia" are the earliest set of county maps readily available to the collector, and they give a delightful image of Britain in the early 17th century. This example emphasises the mountains, naming"The Black Mountains" in the SW, and"Monuchdenny Hill" below the town of Brecon- presumably ... morethe Brecon Beacons as we now call them. With the attractive handcolouring, strapwork cartouches, fine calligraphy and interesting place-names etc. this map is a fascinating historical document. Size: 38cms x 32.5cms(the map image within the mount 32cms x 26.5cms) Condition: In very good condition for so old a map. It has been laid down for framing. The mount stuck to the map as well. Margins not visible but I suspect close-cut. Attractively handcoloured. Centrefold as issued. Slight black scuff marks in centre(see photo) but these do not really detract. Free postage worldwide. I have other such antiquarian maps etc. in my shop- please see my other items.

Original Elizabethan Saxton Antique Map Worcestershire Eng William Hole C1610
If You would like this item bid on it now as like me you may forget to come back and miss out on a fine item! Very Rare Original Antique County Map Of Worcestershire By Christopher Saxton Circa 1576 Engraved By William Hole 1607 Printed C1610 A very rare. Attractive original early 17th Century map of Worcestershire county based on the first survey of England and Wales by Christopher Saxton and published in William Camden's Britannia London. It is the earliest detailed map dedicated solely to the county. William Hole, who engraved the map, is one of earliest recorded English engravers. This one was surveyed during the reign of Elizabeth 1st and printed in 1610 during the reign of James 1st of England. Then restored and framed by Warwick fine arts Ltd 313 Shaftmoor Lane Hall Green Birmingham who have guaranteed this map to be original and ... moreover 400 years old. Christopher Saxton(c.1540– c.1610) was an English cartographer who produced the first county maps of England and Wales. Born C1540 in West Riding Yorkshire. Little is known of his early life, it is believed he attended Cambridge University England. In 1574 Saxton began his survey of England, financed by Thomas Seckford of Suffolk and was completed by 1578. Britannia' First published in 1586, was one of the most popular and influential books of the period. The work of the Elizabethan antiquarian, William Camden(1551-1623) it was a detailed historical and topographical description of Great Britain. Its patriotic sentiments, in particular both appealed to and generated the growing sense of nationalism that was coursing through late Tudor/ early Stuart society. Between 1607 and 1637, county maps engraved by William Kip and William Hole, and based largely on Saxton's surveys, were added. These maps have the distinction of being the first set to show each county individually as opposed to several being grouped together on one page. Camden's Britannia continued to be published well into the 19th century from 1695 to 1772, county maps by Robert Morden w
Original 1607 Saxton and Kip map, Radnorshire, Radnor, hand-coloured
This is an old original. Antique, hand-coloured map of the county of Radnorshire by the well-known early 17 th century cartographer Christopher Saxton. Engraved by William Kip. This would have been for the 1607 edition of William Camden’s Britannia. The text on the rear confirms that it would have come from this edition, rather than a later edition without text on the reverse. The colouring would appear to be later, as the map would originally have been printed just in black ink. This shows the whole of the county. And further down as far as Breknoke(sic) now Brecon. It covers part of the route of Offa’s Dyke as the border between England and Wales. It shows no roads or distances between towns. But it does show lakes, rivers and hills. There is a scale of miles(almost 3 miles to the inch) and a pair of compasses. The map is entitled: Radnor ... moreComitatus quem Silures olim incoluerunt. It is also identified in the bottom left-hand corner as: Christophorus Saxton descript: Wilhelmus Kip sculpsit. The word‘rare’ is often over-used on ebay and on the internet in general. But I do not believe that this is a map that is often to be found. The whole map measures approx. 12.5 x 10.5 in. 32 x 27 cm. to the plain inner border. The original fold line is present down the centre. There is a margin of approx. 0.5 in. 1 cm. to all sides. It is apparent that there is text to the rear of the sheet. Which has been pasted on to card(before I acquired the map) The text on the map is a little faded in some places, but it is 400 years old. There appears to be just a single pin-head size hole in the bottom right-hand corner. The map is not currently mounted. Framed or glazed, but would of course be eminently suitable for framing. Post and packing. In U.K. £3.95, overseas according to destination and service required(insured, registered etc. For any further information. Please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will do my best to answer your query. Please note that feedback will be left once received. As fewer purchasers app
