This listing is for a lovely and decorative map of Suffolk. England. From the reign of James 1st. It is called Suffolke described and divided into hundreds. ... moreMap by John Speed. Dated 1610. Which is the date of the engraving. It was engraved by Jodocus Hondius. I don’t know exactly which year this map was made. I have seen it stated elsewhere with dates ranging from 1611-1627 edition– its an early Speed map circa first quarter and a bit of the 1600’s. Performed by John Speed and are to be solde in Popes-head alley against the exchange by George Hu(m)ble. Magnificent ornate county map with coats of arms. Roman figures and insets including Ipswich. The inset town plan of Ipswich, surveyed by Speed himself, is the earliest known of this place. The plan of the town of Ipswich is flanked by images of the Roman general Petillius Cerealis on the left and Boadicea. The British Queen who famously led the unsuccessful revolt, on the right. The arms of the noble families of the county appear down the sides of this very symmetrically designed map. Good condition as shown- very fine engraving(looks better in person- the pictures were take indoors with a flash) Looks like there may be a repair to the center paper fold at the bottom of the fold(see pictures) Framed- not examined out of the frame. We can see through the glass that this map is NOT glued down. The frame is about 17 5/8 x 22 3/4 inches. The visible map is about 15 3/8 x 22 3/8 inches. It looks like the margins have probably been trimmed. As there is not much room for margins behind the frame's mat. NOTE- VERY IMPORTANT- the ebay shipping rate calculator assumes it will be sent in a tube- removed from the frame- if you want it sent in the frame as shown. Contact us with your address to find out what it will cost to mail the framed item. Canadapost determines its rates from the volume of the package- ie, the frame will take up a lot more space than a tube, so will be quite a bit more expensive to ship.
