Fantastic boxed set of three folding maps from the Ordnance Survey of England. 1878 of the parish of Aston Clinton(Hundred of Aylesbury) in Buckingham. Includes three, linen backed folding maps- measuring 6" x 9.25" when folded and 28" by 42.5" when unfolded. Each map is backed with linen. Each map is in 21 sections which are mounted individually so the map can be folded and unfolded easily and without damage to the map paper. Each map. When folded, has marbled paper covers. The box is green cloth with the mapseller's label: Edward Stanford, London, Wholesale and Retail Mapseller, 55 Charing Cross. There is also pamphlet entitled"Book of Reference to the Plan" which contains 8 pages including a fold-out index showing the section of maps included; the cover of the reference also matches the maps. World War One 18 Linen Flying Maps Air Packet no25 Admiralty War Office Intelligence Division January 1916 incomplete. 2 Sheets missing Fying Map no15 and the Special Fying Map A of District around Sleaford. Measure 12x12 inches.Cover slightly grubby with some stains.Maps in Good Condition Sheet 16 has a oil stain to top right corner. Not seen these Maps before must be rare examples of early flying Maps.Not much info on the Internet but found this info from the late Tim Nicholson. The first known aviation map predates the First World War by several years. Although even before this, in 1910, Flight' magazine was commending the Ordnance Survey's layered half-inch(2 miles to the inch, or approximately 1:125,000) scale map as the best compromise for"motorists and aviators" as its use of contour layering of colour was useful ... morein showing elevations at a glance to the pilot. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the British Association in 1911, and this standard OS half-inch map was criticised for being on too large a scale, a smaller scale being necessary to the pilot to keep the map sheet down to a manageable size. It was also pointed out that the map should be as free of unneccessary ground'clutter' as possible, but with features of use to aviators identified prominently(roads, railways, towns, airfields) Following on from this meeting a map for military aviators, a coloured map at the standard quarter-inch scale(4 miles to the inch, or approx. 1:250,000) was drawn up by the Geographical Section of the General Staff(GSGS) for the British Army manoeuvres of 1911, and although the British manoeuvres were cancelled that year it was used in the subsequent manoeuvres held in 1912. Normal topographical detail was almost entirely absent from the map, and it was reduced to emphasising what a pilot would be able to pick out from the air- roads were depicted as white lines on an olive-green base, towns were red, woods were green, whilst water courses and railways were in heavy blue and black respecti

After the Dunkirk Evacuation at the end of May 1940. The threat of invasion was now very real. The Second World War had come to the Home Front. The military turned to their maps of Great Britain- produced by the Ordnance Survey- to find them woefully outdated and inadequate. Ordnance Survey immediately dropped work on the and began an intensive programme of updating the military’s sheets. Before 1940. The military’s maps of England& Wales had the unmemorable series title‘GSGS 3907’ and of Scotland‘GSGS 3908’ These were based on the sheet ... morelines and mapping of the and. Although the military and civilian series developed separately. The‘War Revision 1940’ used the latest civilian 1-inch sheets available in the correct size. With the addition of a military grid overprint and- if there was time- a few important revisions. Once produced, these sheets took on the‘GSGS 3907’ or‘GSGS 3908’ title. Eleven sheets in the south-west of England used the sheet lines and mapping. Although elsewhere or sheet lines and mapping were used. The first 1-inch War Revision sheets were issued in the Summer of 1940. Ordnance Survey’s priority was England& Wales. Because the threat of invasion was felt to be greater in the southern part of Great Britain. The first Scottish War Revision sheets were not issued until June 1941.
