There are two versions of this map, a larger one which is VERY DAMAGED and will need considerable renovation, and a smaller version of the same map. The small version is in much better condition except that it appears to have had coffee spilled across it as it has a watermark across the middle as pictured. 1886 1st Ordnance Survey Wyld Gloucestershire Old Antique 5 Maps 25inch Slipcase
A set of 5 First Edition 25" to 1 mile Ordnance Survey maps of the area SW of Gloucester. The maps are dated variously between 1884- 1886. And are therefore the first issue at this detailed scale, Glos. being surveyed between 1873- 1884. The 5 maps are mounted on linen with marbled covers, and are stored in an original slipcase which has the original James Wyld label on the front. This label has an index map of the area, and the box is also labelled"Parish of Quedgeley" on the side. The maps themselves are labelled"James Wyld, Geographer to the Queen, 11 and 12, Charing Cross, S.W. The maps cover an area to the South West of Gloucester which include the villages of Elmore and Tuffley. The maps are identified by the numbers XXX111.1.5,7,9, and 10. Sheet xxx111.1 was issued in 1885 Sheet xxx111.5 was issued in 1885 Sheet ... morexxx111.7 was issued in 1886 Sheet xxx111.9 was issued in 1884 Sheet xxx111.10 was issued in 1884. The maps are also numbered 1.2,3,4,and 6 on the front. This could suggest that the box originally contained 6 maps, one of which is missing. However the index map on the front of the box suggests that there are 5 maps which cover the Parish, though only 3 of the 5 maps present here are included in those 5. A little complicated, but all the maps found in this set are shown on the Index map, and have a right therefore to be in this slipcase. They fit in well, without the box being forced which explains why it is in a good condition. The detail on these maps at so large a scale is superb. With lovely handcolouring. The River Severn passes through the area, so too the Railway which seems to be shared by the Midland and GWR. OS maps at this scale are seen as the greatest achievement of the Ordnance Survey, and such early maps should be of interest to anyone who treasures their work in the 19th century. Size: The slipcase is approx. 25cms x 15.5cms. The maps are 104cms x 70cms. Folding down to 23cms x 15cms. Condition: The slipcase is a little bumped and worn. And the original James Wyld

Southampton Approx 6.25" x 9.75" 20 pages inluding open out spreads Cover tanned with a little edgewear and a few smudges and owner name in pencil at top There are some jottings and sketches in pencil on inside of cover Hinges rusty Edges a little darkened with edgewear to one of foldouts. Fifth edition linen Lands end and Lizard 146, fifth edition linen Bideford and Bude 127, OS 174 paper Bude 1946, OS 116 Dolgelley paper 1947, OS 186 Bodmin and Launceston 1946 paper, OS 190 Truro and Falmouth 1946 paper, OS 187 Plymouth 1961 paper. OS 175 Okehampton paper 1960, OS 184 Hastings 1959 paperOS 176 Exeter 160 paper, OS 188 Torquay 1961 paper x 2, OS 174 Bude 1961 paper. OS 164 Minehead 1960 paper, OS 163 Barnsaple 1960 paper. In various conditions with the later maps better. All generally good to very good with the older maps fair to good. Expect some small rips on crease folds, creases, pinholes, names or other small writings, miss folds and other faults but all solid with no bits falling ... moreout or loose panels etc. The 1960's maps are all nice tidy maps.
