Cartographer: Gilles(1688- 1766) and Didier(c. 1723- 1786) Robert de Vaugondy were map publishers. Engravers, and cartographers active in Paris during the mid-18th century. The father and son team are descended from the important Sanson cartographic firm, from whom they inherited much of their initial material. The Vaugondys were well respected for the detail and accuracy of their maps. They were known for making excellent use of the considerable resources available in 18th century Paris to produce the most accurate and fantasy-free maps possible. The Vaugondys compiled their maps based upon their own superior geographic knowledge, scholarly research, the journals of contemporary explorers and missionaries, and direct astronomical observation. Many Vaugondy maps are also highly praised for their title cartouches, which identify each of the sources referenced- an unusual level of scholar decorum for 18th century France. A very rare opportunity to purchase a set of maps. As they were originally issued to subscribers in 1767. They form part of the Atlas Anglicanus by Emanuel Bowen(c1693- 1767) which was first issued in 1767, with a 2nd edition in 1777. By this time Emanuel Bowen was dead, so the project was completed by his son Thomas Bowen, and published by T. Kitchin. The complete Atlas is very scarce(you can buy one online for over £8000.00) and it is even rarer to find the maps issued in the form we have here: Inside a blue paper folder are sewn in 3 County Maps: Lancashire"Divided into Hundreds. Exhibiting the County, Borough, and Market Towns: with concise Historical Extracts, relative to natural Produce, Trade and Manufactures: Describing also the Church Livings, with Improvements not inserted in any other Half Sheet County Map Extant. ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS OFFICER'S PEAKED CAP, FULL DRESS W/ HACKLE
This is an excellent condition Officer's full-dress peaked cap of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. It has the bi-metallic cap badge with Queen's crown. The peak has braid, and it is complete with the distinctive regimental hackle of red over white feathers. It is a size 7 1/8, and was manufactured by Alkit in London. It is in quite excellent condition- the cloth is completely free from mothing, and unstained. It has been worn, as evidenced by slight sweat staining to the sweat band. The hackle is made to be detached, and there is a small bracket attached to the back of the cap badge to accept the wire base of the hackle. The leather of the peak is excellent. The patent leather chin strap is very good. The side buttons are tarnished, so may be silver. The regiment was amalgamated in 1968 into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. So ... morethis cap clearly pre-dates that. I would suspect that it is as early as 1952, as full dress of this type is so rarely worn. The hackle is easily detached. And will be detached for mailing. Victorian Transferware Childs Tea Set Teapot LADY WITH PARASOL ~ NANNY CHILD& DOG John Carr& Sons Low Lights Pottery Northumberland England c1870 This is a gorgeous early transferware childs toy teapot. Circa 1870, originally part of a complete miniature childs tea set. The covered pitcher is transfer printed in rich sepia brown against a creamy earthenware blank, finished with blue ponded pearlware glaze. It stands 2 1/2” tall with an applied London handle. It measures 5 1/8" long. The piece is decorated with the image of a lady with a parasol, with a child and a dog. The lid is decorated with a net of flowers. The teapot is unmarked. The pattern is known to have been produced by John Carr. 19th century pottery manufactory in Northumberland and Scotland in the highlands along the border of England and Scotland. Discussed at page 185) The teapot displays beautifully and is in very good overall condition. There is a small chip inside the lid. A flake on the edge, and no other chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks on the top edge, mild patina and glaze bubbles on the lid, minor typical transfer skips, original to the making. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it.not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. The teapot is a charming example of the most winsome of Romantic genre patterns. Offered as is. Here is a very nice birth and baptismal certificate printed by Scheffer in Harrisburg. For those familiar with the Stopp classification system it is a#389.5. Printed ca1858. The form was done for Amellia Wertz, born 09 February 1865(probably 1860) in Lower Mahonoy Township, and daughter of John Wertz and Hanna Schroader. I cannot find any definitive records for this family. I did, however, find a reference to this family by an ancestor on RootsWeb who said, Sometime shortly after his parents death he(meaning John Wertz) and wife Hannah and his 2 dau. Amelia b. 1860 and Emeline b.1852) apparently moved out of state. This is according to a 1865 North'd Co. court doc. for Catharine Downey w/o George Downey/Daney/Thaney. Vintage Ginger Lithia Water Bottle,Tuckahoe Spring,Northumberland,Pa(?) Late1800
This 9 inch high. BIM, light blue bottle has a short neck resembling a Hutchinson type bottle. Bottle is a very nice light blue color. Embossed on front of bottle above base rim- GINGER LITHIA. Embossed on bottom of bottle- TUCHAHOE. There is no other embossing on this bottle. Bottle has many bubbles throughout of various sizes. There are a few nice ones on shoulder area of bottle. This bottle contained a ginger(and possibly a mixture of others) flavored mineral water that was said to have healing qualities due to the lithium(an alkali metal) found in the water. With the Food and Drug Act of 1907 it was found that there was only trace amounts of lithium in mineral water and thus health benefits unfounded.
