The cup stands 2 1/8” tall with an applied handle. And the saucer 5 1/8" in diameter. The color is a brilliant purple or lavender on a creamy earthenware body. The set is impeccably potted and light bodied. The elegant set depicts a young lady in a garden feeding her pet gazelle antelope or baby deer. With mountains and trees the background. A rare Tiger Lily flower border pattern finishes the rim. The decoration is very rich, with very little white space remaining. The piece is unmarked except for the pattern name MUSK DEER. Circa 1809] A fine highly detailed antique map of Northumberland with fine original handcolour published by John Cary and credited to him at the bottom of the plate. The map printed on hand-made paper with printed title cartouche with compass rose and separate scale of distance. Image size approx. 260mm x 210mm(10.5" x 8.5" with good margins beyond. A VG+ bright clean impression. John Cary(1754- 1835) was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher. Working between 1787 and 1834 in London. Cary’s publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps. His county maps for Richard Gough’s edition of Camden’s Britannia in 1789 evidenced ... moremuch improved hachuring(shading to show land relief and physical features) when compared with earlier examples– Cary’s hachuring was much less overbearing than that used by other mapmakers at this time and did not obscure map data. Up for auction this original First World War British victory medal awarded to Private Charles Reed of the D.L.I. who also served in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Please refer to the scan. Which hopefully is reasonably self-explanatory. The medal is correctly impressed with the recipient's details" 3-11789 PTE. C. REED. DURH. L. I. His M.I.C. indicates that Private Charles Reed was entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio and that he entered France on 21 May 1915. It also indicates that he also served in the Nothumberland Fusiliers under service number 26309. I have not carried out any further research. EARLY 1797 Northumberland to London stampless WAR CONTENT, French Privateers!
Postal History Marvelous find here- EARLY two page stampless folded letter written February 22. 1797 by J.P. DeGruchy in Northumberland, England(along the Scotland border) and sent to her brother Mr. Philip Gavey at No 107 Fenchurch Street in London, England. Note- this letter was previously listed as a Northumberland. Pennsylvania- but several postal historians corrected me- so disregard the previous description. There is a pencil notation on the letter that says U.S.A(in the scan) this is also incorrect. CONTENT IS STILL MAGNIFICENT. I note a Bishop's marking and a London(Ship?postmark. Lovely red wax seal remains. I am not an expert in the manuscript rates on this letter. Content is excellent- writer expresses concern about ships traveling from England to Lisbon. Portugal and how French Privateers delay their travel(no doubt either ... morestealing cargo or trying to hijack the ships. You are bidding on a WWI 1914 Star& Bar Trio. Defence and Cadet Forces Medal group to Acting Lt Col Gilbert Steele Scott Mohon, Durham Army Cadet Force, late Northumberland Yeomanry. Northumberland Fusiliers and West Yorkshire Regiment. The pieces are named: 1914 Star[5 TH AUG– 22 ND NOV 1914] 2230 P TE G.S.MOHON. NORTH'D.YEO. British War Medal– LT G.S.S.MOHON 3-W.YORKS.R Victory Medal– LT G.S.S.MOHON 3-W.YORKS.R Defence Medal– Un-named as awarded Cadet Forces Medal(G-VI-R) A/LT.COL. G.S.S.MOHON A.C.F. Gilbert Mohon was born in Stockton. Durham, in 1891 and served in France with the Northumberland Yeomanry from the 5th October 1914. He transferred to the 9th Battalion. Northumberland Fusiliers on the 23rd September 1917. And was commissioned into the 3rd(Reserve) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment on the 29th May 1918. It appears ... morehe was rather late in claiming his Clasp to the 1914 Star. British War and Victory Medals(hence the unit is shown against his commissioned rank) finally applying in 1951, by which time he was an Acting Lieutenant Colonel in the Durham Army Cadet Force. He was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal in 1950(London Gazette 15th December refers) He died in Durham in 1966. The medals are in excellent condition(though note the clasp to the 1914 Star is a copy) and come complete with a number of copies of Census. London Gazette and MIC entries. I purchased these from Dixon’s Medals a few years back, but now have another group to the Northumberland Yeomanry in my collection.
