ANTIQUE HAND COLOURED J ROPER ENGRAVED COUNTY MAP OF NORTHUMBERLAND
The colours on this Georgian engraved map are vibrant and not at all faded. There is no foxing or staining. And there are no creases or tears. Engraved by J Roper after G Cole, it was published by Verner, Hood and Sharpe- London 1808, and has references to wards together with explanatory key to symbols used for villages, towns, mail coach roads, ancient encampments etc. The map measures approximately 230mm x 173mm to the borders of the map area, with wide margins set in glazed frame which has a label to the reverse for framer George Hughes of Newcastle upon Tyne. The reverse of the frame is inscribed 1810, but the map is clearly dated 1808. The frame measures overall 350mm x 240mm. Overseas postage is an estimate only- I will obtain correct postage when I have packed the item.

Circa 1780] An attractive copper engraved antique county map of Northumberland published in circa 1780 for Francis Grose's"The Antiquities of England& Wales" The map with plain title cartouche and separate scale of distance. Interesting topographical and historical text appears beneath the map and is continued on the verso. Image size of map approx. 120mm x 145mm(4.95" x 5.7" with good margins beyond. A VG+ bright clean impression with no folds. John Seller(circa 1630-1697) was a cartographer and scientific instrument maker who sold his work from his shop at'The Mariner's Compass' in Wapping. London. This was an area much frequented by sailors ... morewho disembarked at Wapping and who often had information useful to Seller for his nautical charts. Seller also offered instruction in"Arithmetick, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, navigation and gunnery; likewise the use of globes and other mathematical instruments, the projection of the sphere and other parts of the mathematics. Seller was a non-conformist and was found guilty of conspiring to kill King Charles II. He was. However, let off and curiously, was appointed Hydrographer to Charles II in 1671. In the same year he published the first volume of an intended maritime atlas entitled'The English Pilot' In 1672 he published volume 2 and parts of volumes 3 and 4 but eventually he abandoned the project and in 1680 sold the rights of publication. Following this. In 1693 he began work in conjunction with others on a survey of England and Wales which was to be called the'Atlas Anglicanus' but this project also came to an end after only six maps had been completed. Circa 1793] A fine highly detailed antique map of Northumberland with fine original handcolour published by John Cary and credited to him at the bottom of the plate. The map printed on hand-made paper with printed title cartouche with compass rose and separate scale of distance. Image size approx. 260mm x 210mm(10.5" x 8.5" with good margins beyond. A VG+ bright clean impression. John Cary(1754- 1835) was a renowned and active map engraver and publisher. Working between 1787 and 1834 in London. Cary’s publications did much to advance the quality and clarity of data presentation on maps. His county maps for Richard Gough’s edition of Camden’s Britannia in 1789 evidenced ... moremuch improved hachuring(shading to show land relief and physical features) when compared with earlier examples– Cary’s hachuring was much less overbearing than that used by other mapmakers at this time and did not obscure map data. Cary’s career really began when he was apprenticed to William Palmer. A noted engraver, in 1770, and he soon gained a reputation as a maker of globes, both terrestrial and celestial, becoming the foremost globe-maker of his day. Under Palmer he also learned the delicate art of engraving that was to stand him in good stead for the rest of his career. He set up his own publishing business c.1783 and, with his understanding of engraving and his interest in the country’s growing transport networks at this time, his map publications were well received. Cary was also to foster the talent of later mapmakers. Aaron Arrowsmith worked for Cary and did much of the research(making measurements and producing drawings) for Cary’s 1784 publication.
