Circa 1780] An attractive copper engraved antique county map of Northumberland published in circa 1780 for Francis Grose's"The Antiquities of England& Wales" The map with plain title cartouche and separate scale of distance. Interesting topographical and historical text appears beneath the map and is continued on the verso. Image size of map approx. 120mm x 145mm(4.95" x 5.7" with good margins beyond. A VG+ bright clean impression with no folds. John Seller(circa 1630-1697) was a cartographer and scientific instrument maker who sold his work from his shop at'The Mariner's Compass' in Wapping. London. This was an area much frequented by sailors who disembarked at Wapping and who often had information useful to Seller for his nautical charts. Seller also offered instruction in"Arithmetick, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, navigation and gunnery; likewise the use of globes and other mathematical instruments, the projection of the sphere and other parts of the mathematics. Seller was a non-conformist and was found guilty of conspiring to kill King Charles II. He was. However, let off and curiously, was appointed Hydrographer to Charles II in 1671. In the same year he published the first volume of an intended maritime atlas entitled'The English Pilot' In 1672 he published volume 2 and parts of volumes 3 and 4 but eventually he abandoned the project and in 1680 sold the rights of publication. Following this. In 1693 he began work in conjunction with others on a survey of England and Wales which was to be called the'Atlas Anglicanus' but this project also came to an end after only six maps had been completed. There are 9 measuring 28mm diameter.5 measuring 20mm diameter and 2 measuring 16mm(these are quite worn and rubbed) The 9 larger ones each have the makers mark: J.R.GAUNT& SON.LONDON, of the group of 5, 3 are marked PITT& CO,MADDOX St.LONDON and 2 are marked J.R.GAUNT& SON.LONDON The two small ones were also made by Gaunt. They both come from lodges in Pennsylvania but I don’t have any further information about the connection. One penny is from the Dannville Pa Chapter No. 239 R A.M. Of interest with this penny is the engraved Shamrock with a sword that is on the capstone. I don’t know if this has some connection with the Irish Brigade or if there were just a lot of Irish in Dannville. The other penny is from the Northumberland Chapter No 174 R.A.M in Sunbury Pa. The only thing that I would note is that the initials engraved on the center of the Keystone may be for Doc Herrington. This penny is a little thicker than most of these that I see. On offer is Part 10 of"Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19" The Northumberland Fusiliers This 158pp. Hard-back book is a 1989 J.B. Hayward& Son reprint of the original 1921 War Office publication. It lists. By battalion, the NCOs& men of the regiment who were killed in action, died of wounds and‘died’ during the First World War. The basic information is the date of death and the theatre of operations. In most cases it also gives the places of birth& enlistment and(very often) place of residence It’s in excellent‘as new’ condition. And is complete with its original dust jacket. Description WWI Tyneside Scottish Cap Badge.20th- 23rd, 29th, 33rd Battalions Northumberland Fusiliers. Fourth pattern cap badge worn from 1916 in one of the Tyneside Scottish battalions. Numerous coats of arms add to the appeal. The sea area is decorated with sailing ships.
