The Sunderland Pottery District in Northeastern England created this maritime. Historical transferware plaque of HMS Northumberland 74. The 74 stands for the number of cannons. The English celebrated the ship after her casualties and victories in the Napoleonic wars. Which she first partook in 1806. She helped defeat the French Navy in 1812. Afterwards the Northumberland transported Napoleon to his post-war sentencing on St. Helena in 1815. By no means is this the rarest lustreware. Maritime plaque out there. What is uncommon, is this example bares a very early mark for this company. AGE: c. 1812. Beginning in 1813. Other financiers joined the company and the pottery marks were changed to reflect this. Later marks read: Dixon& Co. Dixon Austin& Co. Dixon Phillips& Co. MARKED: Impressed: DIXON CO. Retains an early paper label identifying ... moreit as having been in a catalogued collection. 1701 Rare Antique County Map- "NORTHUMBERLAND"- John Seller -Camden's Britannia
A rare antique map of"Northumberland" in England. Drawn and engraved by John Seller and published in Camden's"Britannia Abridg'd" in 1701(see scan of frontispiece- not included) The map was first published five years earlier(1696) in John Seller's"Anglia Contracta" A travellers atlas of small maps which enjoyed considerable success and was printed in several editions from 1696 to 1703. This example, however, was published in Camden's Britannia Abridg'd of 1701(the year that John Seller died) again designed to be portable for the traveller. As testament to the quality of the maps the original engraved plates were purchased by Francis Grose some 70 years later and republished in The Antiquities of England and Wales between 1773 and 1787. However the original cartouches were simplified. John ... moreSeller's name removed(but not all carried his name including this one) and the maps were published at the top of a page of text. The later Grose versions are therefore much less rare and are clearly distinguishable by including the text and not having the clear vertical folds which are featured in the originals as they were folded into the octavo sized publication. Antique VICTORIAN MILITARY HAT TIN CASE. Northumberland Fusiliers, R.E. CECIL. This hat box is from the Late 19th Century Beginning of the 20th Century London. The Norhtumberland Fusiliers were stationed in London from the 1880's through to WW I. The medalian on the top is Gillott and Hasell which was an exclusive Military Uniform Company located at 2 New Bullington Street. London, England. The Owner of the Hat Box. R.E. Cecil, Esq. from the Nameplate on the top, was obviously a junior officer and probably related to the Preeminent Cecil Family of London. The Cecil Family goes back many years in England. A few decades before this Hat box was Robert Edward Cecil. 1st Marquis of Salisbury was 3 times Prime Minister of England in the 19th Century. Prime Minster Cecil had several sons, one of them was Robert Edward Cecil, who served in Parliament, ... moreand won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in forming the League of Nations. The younger Robert Cecil, though being the correct age to serve and be owner of the hat box, was probably not. I could find no record of him serving in the military as a young man. But he had a cousin, Rupert Edward Cecil, who was an officer about this time. Rupert died at the very beginning of WW I. I don't know if Rupert was a member of the Fusiliers or not. It is difficult to do British historical research on the more obscure members of the Cecil Family here in the states. If there is anyone who knows more about the Cecil Family of London. I would be most appreciative on any information you could share. The Hat box appears to be in very good condition for it's age of approximate 110 years. There is some rust and staining on the outside of the box as well as chipping of the paint. The inside appears excellent. The last picture shows a weld or repair of some kind. Hold on the Gillott and Hasell medalion. I purchased this Hat box from an estate from someone in their 70 who had passed last year. The daughter told me that her parents bought the hat box from an antique store in London. Som
