Biography: Emanuel Bowen(fl. 1714- 67) An 18th century map and print seller. Who worked in London from about 1714, producing some of the best and attractive maps of the century. A recurring feature of Bowen's work, evident even on the early road maps, was his habit of filling every corner and space of the map with jottings and footnotes, both historical and topographical. One of his earliest engraved works Britannia Depicta, published in 1720 contained over two hundred road maps together with a miniature county map of each of the counties of England and Wales. It was an unusual feature of the atlas that the maps were engraved on both sides of each page. And this resulted in a handier sized book. He also issued with John Owen a book of road maps based. As was usual at the time, on Ogilby but again incorporating his own style of historical and heraldic detail. Inspite of his royal appointments and apparent prosperity he died in poverty and his son. ROBERTS of Northampton. MASS. As shown. This is in a Fahy's MONTAUK case, the Montauk being either 10K or 14K gold filled. This is in operating condition but loses about 20 minutes a day so I'm sure it needs an adjustment and/or cleaning. As shown. The name is both on the enamel dial and on the works along with the model number 1362850. I believe this is very rare because I have not been able to find anything on this maker other than a reference to F.W. Roberts Jewelers that operated at 197 Main Street. Northampton, Mass in the late 1800's and very early 1900's. The crystal and case are in excellent used condition although. This is a drawing of the original Northampton Community College in Bethlehem. Pennsylvania. I believe it was done in ink but I'm not positive. It is numbered 287 out of 300. It is signed by the artist and I believe the last name is Doney. I bought this at an auction years ago at a house right next to the college that I believe might have been knocked down when the college was expanded. The owners might have had some affiliation with the college. The paper the drawing is on has yellowed, and there is some water spots on it, but it is still a very nice drawing.

Though seen as weak and dominated by his wife’s relations, he undertook many great building projects, including major works at Northampton Castle from 1248. So great was the disruption during the improvements that it became inconvenient to hold the great tournaments until the work was almost completed in 1265-6. In this year, Henry again stayed at Northampton where he continued his almsgiving of shoes to the poor, which he began in 1229: 250 pairs were supplied. Henry’s reign is noted for the rebellion of the barons led by Simon de Montfort. Who seized Northampton in 1264, and lost it again. Simon was finally defeated and slain at the Battle of Evesham in August 1265. Kite. To China, his wife, Anne, and his young son accompaning him while Annie remained in London with relatives. The ship foundered on the China Coast near Ningbo and the only survivor was Anne Noble. She was rescued by peasants and turned over to the Chinese military, this being the time of the First Opium War. She was interned in a prison camp in which there were British Royal Marines who were also interned. The Marines and Mrs. Noble struck up a correspondence, the medium being short notes written on scraps of rice paper, delivered by bribed prison guards. The seller had around forty of these notes and sold them to a collector, but before doing so transcribed them. Mrs. Noble was released in 1841 and returned to London. They settled down and became communicants at the Plymouth Street Church where Henry Ward Beecher held forth. After the Civil War, Annie, now a grown woman met Colonel Charles Walbridge and settled with him at his home town of Buffalo where he established a profitable Hardware business. They had three girls, Wilhelmina, Isabel and Louise. The oldest daughter, Wilhelmina, went to Smith College, Northampton Massachusetts and it is her letters home to her family in Buffalo that form the bulk of this collection. Few of the letters are year dated. A few are in original envelopes that bear dated postmarks. However, the more one reads the letters some year dates become apparent through context. There is much about Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. in this correspondence. The two colleges were but a short train ride apart, and Smith being a woman's college and Amherst being a men's College, it is natural that they were brother/sister schools. Each knife is in pristine condition without scratches. Sharpening, priiting or any evidence of use. The box is intact with blue velvet lining and the Northampton label on the lid. As can be seen in the pictures, some of the blue surface of the box lid, especially on the edges, has been worn off.

President Calvin Coolidge from Vermont was a lawyer in Northampton Massachusetts before his run for presidency. It was during his time there that he wrote out this check- dated August 1913- to one H.H. Chilson. Mr Chilson a clerk at the time. Would become a prominent banker in Western Massachusetts. The check is drafted in the amount of $9.00 and is signed by Calvin Coolidge and endorsed by H.H. Chilson. It is check number 2896 from Coolidge' law practice. Queen's South Africa 1899-1902 (Boer War) to Northampton(shire) Regiment
QSA: An original. Full-size, Queen's South Africa medal 1901-1902 engraved to"3105 Pte T. Marks, Nthptn: Regt" For service with the Northamptonshire Regiment. The right hand side of the suspension is loose and a paper with the medal indicates that Marks is entitled to the Cape Colony clasp. Perhaps its addition had been attempted at some time. Otherwise. This silver medal is in very fine condition also included is a piece of QSA ribbon. Numerous skirmishes and battles occurred between the British and the Dutch Boer settlers in South Africa. The settlements were twice seized by the British during the Napoleonic Wars. No British campaign medal was issued for the 1st Boer War which occurred between 1880 and 1881. Tensions were continuous and when gold was discovered in Transvaal in 1886 a large number of outsiders migrated to the ... morearea threatening Boer domination. These outsides(Uitlanders) were supposedly represented by the British who planned a takeover in a Transvaal revolt that never actually happened. The Uitlander uprising never actually occurred but their presence meant the problem was unresolved and so began the Boer War of 1899. Curiously. It was initially anticipated that the Boer War would only take one year. Nice toned and with ribbon, neatly display mounted.
