This beautiful. HAND COLORED woodblock map is from a French version of Münster's historic antique encyclopedic atlas of the world. The Cosmographia. And depicts Germany and the surrounding area, though the map flipped and shows north at the bottom. Approximate diminsions: the full sheet measures 7 ¾ x 11 ¾” The woodblock measures 5 ¾ x 4" Condition: It is in great condition for being nearly 500 year old! However there is some soiling. His work, the Cosmographia from 1544, was the earliest German description of the world. He was born in Ingelheim. Near Mainz, as the son of Andreas Munster. His parents and other ancestors were farmers. In 1505, he entered the Franciscan order. Four years later, he entered a monastery where he became a student of Konrad Pelikan for five years. Münster completed his studies at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen in 1518. His graduate adviser was Johannes Stöffler. He left the Franciscans for the Lutheran Church in order to accept an appointment at the Reformed Church-dominated University of Basel in 1529. He had long harbored an interest in the Lutherans. 1588 Munster Engraving- Augusta Raurica Sebastian Munster was responsible for the most complete of early illustrated geographies when he produced his'Cosmographia' in the early 1540's. Perhaps only Schedel's'Nuremberg Chronicle' had a greater impact on the early Renaissance view of the world. Munster used a variety of woodcut views and maps to complete a very detailed view of Europe. With more speculative items for other continents. Cosmographia' was a great success and went through many editions into the early 1600's. 7 Antique Maps of Gemany- Munster, Cologne, Wittenburg, Hamburg, & More- Merians
I have 7 maps in great condition up for auction. I only know what I could figure by looking at them. The internet was no help in trying to research these current ones. The six black and white are reproductions of Matthaus Merians maps of Germany, made in the late 1950's by pharmaceutical company Robugen GMBH. Maybe part of a promotion? They have a blurb of info about the geographical region on the back of each, as well as info on Robugen GMBH's latest drug. The colored map is a reproduction of a Johanne Baptiste Homann. But I cannot find a date on it. It was put out by Rhein-Chemie Pharmaceuticals. In the pictures. The maps may appear darker and split in the middle, but this is because they would not fit in my scanner and I had to stitch two images to together to create one large image. The maps are in one peice, with no defects in ... morethe middle. They have all been rolled for storage, and the colored map has been folded neatly half at some point. Costume is nylon and still brightly colored nylon but stained. Box has nice graphics but is torn on side. The second one is The Skeleton large(12-14) Ben Cooper costume. The mask glows in the dark and has cracks around the edges. The costume is in good condition with only a small repairable seam split in the back. Box has nice graphics and a couple small tears.
