After the conquest of Gaul by the Romans in 50 B.C. the Rhine became part of the border of the Roman Empire. The Romans erected camps and forts along the river from the Alps down to the North Sea. One of these camps was at Speyer. Built around 10 BC for a 500-man–strong infantry group and also intended as a base for further conquests on the east side of the Rhine. The decisive factor for the location were the wedge-shaped high river banks, of which the tip pointed far east into the floodplain of the Rhine. Thus a settlement safe from floods became possible right by the river. 1588 Munster Engraving- Jerusalem Sebastian Munster was responsible for the most complete of early illustrated geographies when he produced his'Cosmographia' in the early 1540's. Perhaps only Schedel's'Nuremberg Chronicle' had a greater impact on the early Renaissance view of the world. 1588 Munster Engraving- Schwartzwald Sebastian Munster was responsible for the most complete of early illustrated geographies when he produced his'Cosmographia' in the early 1540's. Perhaps only Schedel's'Nuremberg Chronicle' had a greater impact on the early Renaissance view of the world. Munster used a variety of woodcut views and maps to complete a very detailed view of Europe. With more speculative items for other continents. Cosmographia' was a great success and went through many editions into the early 1600's. The engraving shows a view of animal life in the Black Forest. His parents and other ancestors were farmers. In 1505, he entered the Franciscan order. Four years later, he entered a monastery where he became a student of Konrad Pelikan for five years. Münster completed his studies at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen in 1518. His graduate adviser was Johannes Stöffler. He left the Franciscans for the Lutheran Church in order to accept an appointment at the Reformed Church-dominated University of Basel in 1529. He had long harbored an interest in the Lutherans. Vintage German Munster Bier RARE Salt Glaze Stoneware Beer Mug Stein, Free Shpg!
Hearty Munster Bier salt glaze stoneware stein. Heavy Pub Style Stein made to take a lot of use and handling. It is vintage. More than 35 years old, but the exact date of purchase is not known. It was used only for display and the only marks on it are some slight dark bluish marks that must have been part of the salt glaze finish. The process makes the surface a bit lumpy and rough, as it is supposed to be. This stein has been stored for over 25 years. There is a mark O.B. on the bottom which may mean Bavaria or a stein maker near the OB River in Germany. It is 4.8" tall, 3.75" base. The widest part at handle is 5.5" It is somewhat rare, as I could not find a salt glaze stein similar to this anywhere for sale. Shipping to the new Owner is free. Posted with
