This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. The map covers both Delaware and Maryland as well as parts of the adjacent states. A large inset of the District of Columbia(Washington D.C. appears in the lower left quadrant. The Chesapeake Bay is rendered in full. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state vs. federal sovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. The Chesapeake Bay region was the seat of the Civil War and many of its most important battles took place here. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. In the lower left quadrant there are engraved views of the Capitol Building and Harper’s Ferry, an important gateway to the west. At the bottom of the map, in the center, a text block describes the work of Mason& Dixon in drawing the Pennsylvania- Maryland border along the 38th latitude. Cartographically this map is based upon the earlier work of J. H. Colton. This particular example is the first of this series in which the government buildings appear at the top of the map. The previous variant, 1860, features only the capitol building in roughly the same location. The next variant, taking a hint from Colton, will drop out the views in the lower left quadrant entirely in exchange for an inset plan of Washington D.C. But there is an ad for Capital Milk that says"for virtually three-quarters of a century-since 1853. I can't say for sure it was printed in 1927, but somewhere around then. The title is Cooking, Baking and Preparation of Foods. It is edited and compiled by Members of the Eastern Star of Sacramento for the benefit of the building fund. This is not your normal cheaply printed church cookbook. It was printed by Larkin Printing Co. in Sacramento just like a normal hardcover book. It is filled with ads for Sacramento businesses, which probably paid for the expense of the printing. It has 160 pages. And is in pretty good shape. There is a name on the inside front cover from long ago. The pages have ... moreslightly yellowed over the years. Between pages 48 and 49 there is a binding issue where it looks like something heavy was put on top to keep the pages open. The outside has some shelf wear and small nicks that you would expect. I believe it dates from the 1950's or 60's, maybe earlier. It is clearly marked 14K on the inside of the band. Weighs a hefty 14.6 grams, and is in very good condition- light wear overall- no significant damage. The(man-made) ruby side panels are still tightly set and have some edge and corner wear(tiny chips) as you may see in my close-ups. The red enamel above the double eagle's head has chipped out in one spot& shows gold. The face of this ring measures about 3/4" across& 5/8" tall. I measured the(tested) diamond with my digital calipers to be 5mm across, making it about 1/2 carat. The diamond looks very clean& bright externally& internally, although it has not been graded.
