Raised bands. Minimal wear. Corners refurbished. Front blank mildly creased. Faint bump crease to top corner of the page block. Title page and fifty maps all in very good order with no loss or staining. Two of the maps are folding and each has a very inconsequential small closed and repaired handling tear near the mount. 1767 Bowen England Wales Yorkshire Maps Antique Old Atlas Anglicanus Title Page
A very rare opportunity to purchase a set of maps. As they were originally issued to subscribers in 1767. They form part of the Atlas Anglicanus by Emanuel Bowen(c1693- 1767) which was first issued in 1767, with a 2nd edition in 1777. By this time Emanuel Bowen was dead, so the project was completed by his son Thomas Bowen, and published by T. Kitchin. The complete Atlas is very scarce(you can buy one online for over £8000.00) and it is even rarer to find the maps issued in the form we have here: Inside a blue paper folder are sewn in a List of Subscriber's names. The Title Page of the Atlas, a Map of England and Wales"Divided into their respective Counties; Containing all the Cities, Boroughs, Market Towns, etc. and with many additional improvements. a"Modern Map of the Roads of England and Wales; with the Measured Distances ... morebetween Town and Town. and a Map of"Yorkshire, Divided into its Ridings. So 3 maps in all, plus a Title Page and List of Subscribers. This folder forms part 15 of the subscription series. And once all the series had been sent out to the subscribers, they would then have been taken to a book binder and bound into a complete Atlas. The maps in this Atlas are a delight, the County maps often with extensive historical annotations filling the blank areas- details of towns, battles, industry, agriculture etc. giving a superb picture of late-18th century Britain. Their format is similar to that of the maps in Bowen's more common"Large English Atlas" but these offered here are much rarer and somewhat smaller: Size: approx. 39cms x 25cms. The folders measure some 41cms x 26. Condition: These maps. In a rare format as issued to subscribers are in very good condition, having been in the blue folder since issued. Wire bound book of antique road maps. Entitled DUPLEX ROAD MAPS OF ENGLAND, WALES AND SCOTLAND. Dark blue faux leather binding, with marble designs on the paste-down endpapers. 32 pages of maps, on thick card-stock paper. No date to be found, but I judge the book to be circa 1930s or 1940s. Good condition. Some bowing of the covers has occurred, as well as browning of the pages from age. There are some light pencil marks on the first page. Some of the pages are creased at the binding but none are loose.

Six double-page general maps covering the whole of England& Wales. From a 1912 Citizen's Atlas. Each sheet measures approx 46x36cm with centrefolds as issued. Condition is fair to good; the main condition issue is uneven centrefolds with in effect a gentle trough running along them; some light soiling along the centrefolds. Beyond that the printed areas are clean and bright with very attractive printed colour. The margins are tanned and quite dark on the edges; one or two handling marks. Versos blank and clean. Few look like they were ever opened and only four(Shrewsbury#126, Tenby#158, St David's#157, Blairgowrie#53) appear to have any map wear at all. A lovely large map sheet from JG Bartholomew’s folio atlas The Survey Atlas of England& Wales. Published in 1903. It measures approx 60x45cm with a vertical centrefold as issued. Attractive printed colour. The main geological map has a detailed key; smaller maps show Coal& Iron and Environs of London. Condition is very good. Exceptionally clean and bright; the odd speck but very minor. Verso blank besides plate number and title. A really first class example. I’ll post the map rolled in a posting tube. The bad news is that because the map is 45cm it is classed as a medium parcel so first class postage is £5.65 plus £1.10 for the tube plus 75p for the ebay 10% charge on postage. 1855 Two Large Antique Maps- England and Wales - Edward Weller Atlas -Hand Color
Two doube-page antique maps(North Part and South Part) which. Combined, illustrate the whole of England and Wales divided into its counties. The maps are drawn and engraved by Edward Weller(see below) who at this time was located at Duke Street, Bloomsbury. Weller was a successful publisher of maps and issued a number of atlases between 1850 and 1880. These have no date but are beautifully and meticulously hand colored suggesting an expensive edition probably dating from the 1850's. Original hand coloring to the county borders. Good condition with two minor tears in the borders well clear of the maps. Page size 21.5 x 14.5 inches each with central folds as issued. Weller was a nephew of another well-known map publisher Sidney Hall, ... morewho gave him 50 Pounds to pay his apprenticeship fees. He engraved for many prominent mapmakers and was active enough in the community to be recommended for membership to the Royal Geographical Society in 1851 on the recommendation of John Arrowsmith, among others. He eventually inherited the Sidney Hall map business which led him to follow Arrowsmith as the unofficial geographer to the Royal Geographical Society. Weller was among the first map printers in London to embrace lithography. His best known work appears in Cassell's Weekly Dispatch Atlas. Published in monthly segments for subscribers of the'Weekly Dispatch' newspaper. This collection of maps eventually grew to include much of the known world. Twin Foldex 4 inches to 1 mile maps of Great Britain: 1950's: England. Scotland, Wales complete. Touring, holiday and service maps The maps are undated but I believe that they are from the 1950's. The maps are in a hard back cover which is in great condition. There are 6 folded double sided maps(making 12 maps in total) The maps appear to be in very good condition and I haven't seen any obvious marks on them. There is sellotape on the folds of ALL the maps. I don't think that this is to repair them but to reinforce them to prevent any obvious damage. This seems to be a very rare set of maps. Here are three antique Bartolomew's cloth on board road maps- Scotland Sheet 4 Glasgow& Oban Orographical Colouring and Roads; Scotland Sheet 7 Border Country Orographical Colouring and Roads; 4 Miles to the Inch Road Map of England& Wales Sheet 3 York. No date. I believe they come from the 1920s or 1930s. Overall in good conditions, some fraying, a couple of small holes here and there and edge wear, but still attractive. They all have labels from the stores that sold the(Cornish Brothers, Birmingham and Philip, Son, and Nephew, Ltd, Liverpool) Please check my other listings for more interesting collectibles. Six vintage Bartholomews maps, Wales/Shropshire/Wye Valley, 1940s
These maps are as follows: Quarter inch to one mile Automobile Map of Great Britain. Cardigan-Cardiff Sheet 17, on paper, excellent condition Quarter inch to one mile Automobile Map of Great Britain. Abersystwyth-Shrewsbury Sheet 14, on paper, very good condition, slight staining to cover but not on map Half inch to One mile Contoured Map. Pembroke Sheet 11, on cloth, very good condition, cover a bit grubby but map excellent Half inch to One mile Contoured Map. Wye Valley Sheet 13, on paper, excellent condition Half inch to One mile Contoured Map. N.Shropshire Sheet 23, on cloth, excellent condition 2 miles to an inch Reduced Survey Tourists and Cyclists map. Shropshire Sheet 17, on cloth, poor condition with sellotape repairs and one piece including back cover missing. None of them have dates that I can see. The quarter inch maps say"By ... moreappointment to the H M The King" And the half inch ones"By appointment to the Late King George V" who died in 1937) The Pembroke one looks earlier than the other half-inch maps. The cyclists' map looks earlier, probably late 1920s/1930s. Cover sizes 23cm x 10cm for the quarter inch. 9.5 x 19cm for the older half-inch, 10.5 x 20 for the newer half inch.
