Lake Erie Maps& Prints! An Original Antique Map: Not a Reproduction! See Our Ebay Store for other! Free Shipping on Purchases of 5 or More Maps and ... morePrints Description: It is an original antique copper engraved map on paper approximately 179 years old. It is drawn by R. Creighton and engraved by J.C. Walker as stated in small print in the bottom margin. It is from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of England. Also stated in the bottom margin. Published in London by Lewis& Co. 1831, a copy fo the volume IV title page is included. Overall a very nice map in great condition that would frame up nicely, printed on heavy paper with the copper plate marks embossed around the margins and blank on the reverse. The map is not matted nor framed, being sold as a single individual sheet as shown in the pic. Size: The map image area measures 7 by 9 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12 1/2" page with a wide margin all around. Condition: The print is in Very Good or better condition for its age. Blank on the reverse, in its original uncolored state as issued, basically as seen in the pic. Other than a couple of very minor spots around the margins, it is very clean on a bright page that would frame up nicely. The paper is an off white buff with only some light tonal aging mainly around the edges. See the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual print. Payment Details: We accept most major credit cards through Paypal and Ebay. Please ask if you have any questions about payment. International and New Bidders are welcomed and encouraged. 1636 Jansson Map of New York, Virginia, and New England
1636 Jansson Map of New York. Virginia, and New England WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia. Description: A fine first edition first state old color example of Jan Jansson's 1636 map of the northeast American coastline from Cape Lookout(here identified as C. of Feare) to Nova Scotia. The map includes parts of modern day North Carolina. Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Nova Scotia. Most particularly, it offers some of the earliest depictions of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Manhattan Island, New Amsterdam, Long Island, and the Great Lakes. Cartographically Jansson derived this map from the 1630 map of Johannes de Laet and Hessel Gerritsz. Though it is presented on a much larger ... morescale, Jansson's map adheres closely to the de Laet nomenclature with few changes of significance. In addition to increasing the map's scale, Jansson also enlarged the scope of his map to cover additional lands to the north and west. Jansson's adherence to the de Laet model continues on the verso where the de Laet text describing the region is transcribed verbatim. A large decorative title cartouche of a baroque ethic in the upper left quadrant present's the map's title Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia. The title sets the stage for the map as a whole, which can best be understood as a pageant of conflicting colonial and economic interests, in particular rivalries between English, Dutch, and French colonies. The very title, in which Nova Anglia supersedes Novum Belgium(named after the Belgian based Walloon Protestants who were the primary backers of the Dutch West India Company) exemplifies many of these issues. In subsequent editions of this map Jansson reversed the title order giving Novum Belgium precedence. Jansson centers the map on New Nederland and more specifically on the Hudson Valley, sandwiched between English colonies in Nieuw Engeland(New E

Pinky" Stark, and Wing Commander Joe Berry, to streak towards these winged bastards in their Tempests and Typhoons and shoot them down, or give them the"tip wing" which threw off the gyros and made them stall and crash. This map would make a great addition to any WWII RAF collection. Certainly ... moreto anyone now in Kent can pinpoint if one of these actually hit on the property you now live on! I mean. My God, look how many fell! Here is a bit about Joe Berry. WWII RAF Squadron Leader Joseph Berry. DFC* Joe Berry was awarded a DFC in March 1944. In June of that year he was posted to flying Mosquito's. Fighter Command formed a special flight of Tempests to intercept the V1's which had begun falling all over south-east England. With this flight operating mainly by night. Over the next two months Joseph was to establish himself as the top-scorer against these bastard robots in the Tempest. Shooting down 52 and one shared by early August. On July 23 1944. He set the record, claiming seven in one night. Four nights later he pursed one at low level over West Malling airfield. Closing to 100 feet in order to ensure he destroyed it before it fell on the base. His own aircraft was damaged in the resultant explosion. On August 16 1944. The Tempest flight moved to Manston to reform 501 Squadron, of which Berry became commanding officer. The unit continued to hunt V1's, and he personally accounted for seven more, receiving a Bar to his DFC during September. During th

The"National Atlas" was first published with 46 maps in 1843 and was the genesis of Johnston's later"Physical Atlas" The publication of the"National Atlas" marked the emergence of Edinburgh as a primary centre of map production. Wikipedia: Alexander Keith Johnston was ... moreborn at Kirkhill near Edinburgh. After an education at the high school and the University of Edinburgh he was apprenticed to an engraver; and in 1826 joined his brother(who would become Sir William Johnston, Lord Provost of Edinburgh) in a printing and engraving business, forming the well-known cartographical firm of W. and A. K. Johnston. His interest in geography had developed early, and his first important work was the National Atlas of General Geography, which gained for him in 1843 the appointment of Geographer Royal for Scotland. Johnston was the first to bring the study of physical geography into competent notice in England. His attention had been called to the subject by Alexander von Humboldt; and after years of labour he published his magnificent Physical Atlas in 1848, followed by a second and enlarged edition in 1856. This, by means of maps with descriptive letterpress, illustrates the geology, hydrography, meteorology, botany, zoology, and ethnology of the globe. The rest of Johnston's life was devoted to geography, his later years to its educational aspects especially. His services were recognized by the leading scientific societies of Europe and America.
