This is an Antique Hand Painted Map of Kent. England, from the year 1658, engraved with original coloring. The title cartouche lower left reads, Cantivm Vernacule Kent. The Cities, Earles, and households are described and observed. It features 7 hand painted Coats of Arms, several angels or putti and the Mitre and Crozier of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Coats of Arms included are those of Thomas Holland, Edmund Graye, William Neuill, Edmond Woodflok, Hubert de Burgh, William Iprese Earl of Elan, and Odo Bishop of Bayen. There are also depictions of Sailing Ships and Sea Creatures. This map is not only a fascinating snapshot of history, it is a beautiful work of art. Much is written in old Latin. For example, Mare Germanicum" in the upper right is Latin for"German Sea. The title"Cantivm Vernacule" is Latin for"Indigenous ... moreKent. Julius Caesar referred to the area as"Cantium. The engraved area of the map measures 20 inches by 15 inches. The frame measures 23 inches by 19 1/2 inches. The printing plate mark is clearly visible on the edges as is the hand painting. This map is in excellent age appropriate condition and has the center fold usually found on these maps. There are a few small age spots present. There is a faint pencil mark indicating the year 1658 as shown in photo 11. I have taken several photos from different angles so you can get a clear view. This map was owned by a British family who lived in Boston. Massachusetts for many years. On the reverse of the frame is a label from Fred Olssen's Art Shop, 9 Boylston Street, Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Olssen's Art Shop was a well respected presence at Harvard Square for many years. They closed in 1950. The modern name of Kent is derived from"Cantus" meaning rim or border. Because of its abundance of orchards and hop gardens. It has long been called"The Garden of England. The south east location of Kent county being between London and continental Europe has led to it being in the front line

You are looking at a Vintage WW2 Map Reader. It is a Pocket Folding Loupe. Or Magnifying Glass, made in ENGLAND. This is 1 3/4 inches long, and just under 1 inch wide. I tried to take some photos looking through the lens so you can see how powerful it is. I have a road map in another listing. The road map and this magnifying piece were in the same foot locker. I can just imagine the men using this eye glass with the map in the field. It is so amazing what these men had to work with. And how they made it through. Original, copper-engraved map of the west midlands of England and northern Wales, by Gerardus Mercator: Westmorlandia, Lancastria, Cestria, Caernarvan, Denbigh, Flint, Merionidh, Montgomery, Salopia Cum Insulis Mania Et Anglesey. From from an early French edition of Atlas sive Cosmographicae, Amsterdam, 1595] Dimensions 18" x 22 1/4(overall) 14 1/4" x 16 1/4" engraved surface. Fine, original color. Light staining in margins, browning, otherwise fine. A good dark, early impression. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, Dutch writer, astronomer and mathematician. The excellence of his work brought him the patronage of Charles V, but in spite of his favor with the Emperor he was caught up in the persecution of Lutheran protestants and charged with heresy, fortunately without ... moreserious consequences. No doubt the fear of further persecution influenced his move in 1552 to Duisburg, where he continued the production of maps, globes and instruments. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years.

Description: Striking and higtly detaile copper engraved map of North Yorkshire. Map gives several details concerning cites. Villages, rivers, forests. Map adorned with a strapwork title cartouche embellished with a sheppard, some sheeps and a deep. The map shows five cherubs, 15 gently armorials and another cartouche including two scales of distance adorned by cherubs and mairmaid. Jansson began to prepare his volume devoted to the British Isles c.1640. In 1644 he published eleven county maps in an appendix to the"Atlas" Ut they appeared from 1646 in the"Novus Atlas" Jansson's county maps are seen far less frequently than those of his rival Blaeu, but are similar in appearance with coats ... moreof arms and decorative title cartouches. Jansson, like Blaeu, used Speed maps when creating his own thus showing hundreds but no roads. However, Jansson(and Blaeu) chose to omit Speed's innovative town plans. Date: 1646( undated) Dimension: Pa per size approx. cm 56.6 x 47,8 Condition: Very strong a nd dark impression on good paper. Paper with chains and wiremarks. Uncolored as issued. Wide margins. Small foxing. Small browning. Conditions are as you can see in the images. Mapmaker: Jan Jansson or Johannes Janssonius(1588- 1664) was born in Arnhem. Holland. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. About this time, Jansson's name also begins to appear on Hondius reissues of notable Mercator/Hondius atlases. Jansson's last major work was his issue of the 1646 full edition
