John Speed launched Britain into the modern era of mapmaking. Speed(1552- 1629) was an antiquarian who helped preserve many legends about britain's history, but his unique maps are his chief legacy. Speed's atlas consisted of sixty-seven maps- complemented by descriptive and informative text- of all the counties and regions of England, Wales, Scotland, and ireland. he acknowledged that the maps were based on the work of earlier surveyors, but his atlas offered a totality that no contemporaneous cartographer had accomplished. In addition, Speed's atlas was notable because each map included a plan of the most important town in the county; in many cases Speed's were the first maps of those towns ever printed. Whether Speed drew them himself we do not know: for one man to visit and map sixty or more towns scattered from Penzance to berwick and from Canterbury to Carlisle would have been a monumental undertaking in Stuart-era England It is more likely that he commissioned the maps from local surveyors. Creighton and engraved by J.C. Walker as stated in small print in the bottom margin. It is from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of England. Also stated in the bottom margin. Published in London by Lewis& Co. 1831, a copy fo the volume IV title page is included. Overall a very nice map in great condition that would frame up nicely, printed on heavy paper with the copper plate marks embossed around the margins and blank on the reverse with a horizontal and three vertical folds as issued. The map is not matted nor framed, being sold as a single individual sheet ... moreas shown in the pic. Size: The map image area measures 15 by 18 1/2 inches on a 16 1/2 by 22" page with a wide margin all around. Condition: The map is in Good condition for its age. Blank on the reverse, in its original uncolored state as issued, basically as seen in the pic. There have been some repairs made on the reverse with Japanese paper reinforcing tears at the ends of the folds, the longest about four inches and a couple of short edge tears. There is some light browning as seen in thepics and backprinting, otherwise it is fairly clean in general. The paper is an off white buff color of heavy quality. See the pic for more on condition. On heavy stock paper this large map has original coloring depicting the county boundaries. It is very detailed with rivers. Towns, harbors, etc. At the top is part of Scotland and the bottom shows part of France. England and Wales are shown with the Irish Sea and S. George’s Channel on the left and the North Sea or German Ocean on the right side. At the bottom is the English Channel. Size and Condition In fine condition. This very attractive map features wide margins. There is a little soiling and a few tears in the margins but the colors are very vivid and the engraving very crisp. On one sheet, three maps of the english Islands of Jersey, Farne and Guernsey and a map of the scottish island of Holy Island. Each map gives several details concerning cites. Villages, rivers, mountains. Each map is adorned with a strapwork figurative title cartouche. Plate flanked with galleons and compass roses radiating rhumb lines. Jansson began to prepare his volume devoted to the British Isles c.1640. In 1644 he published eleven county maps in an appendix to the"Atlas" Ut they appeared from 1646 in the"Novus Atlas" Jansson's county maps are seen far less frequently than those of his rival Blaeu, but are similar in appearance with coats of ... morearms and decorative title cartouches. Jansson, like Blaeu, used Speed maps when creating his own thus showing hundreds but no roads. However, Jansson(and Blaeu) chose to omit Speed's innovative town plans. He was the son of a printer and bookseller and in 1612 married into the cartographically prominent Hondius family. Following his marriage he moved to Amsterdam where he worked as a book publisher. It was not until 1616 that Jansson produced his first maps, most of which were heavily influenced by Blaeu. In the mid 1630s Jansson partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius, to produce his important work, the eleven volume Atlas Major. During the mid 19th Century many books of travel and exploration were published by Tallis, using the extraordinary artistic and engraving skills of John Rapkin. Beginning in 1851, John Tallis& Co. issued their Illustrated Atlas, which contained maps of all parts of the world. These detailed maps are particularly prized for their decorative borders and the small finely engraved vignettes of indigenous scenes, people, etc. Generally regarded as the most decorative mid 19th Century Atlas map of its type.
