Antique Sterling Silver Cigarette Case Maker's Mark CD London England For Your Antique Box Collection Details Description: Antique heavy gauge sterling silver cigarette case with machine turned exterior decorated with a band of floral design along the edges. The box is slightly curved and has a push button to open it. The inside of the box has a gold wash and is marked with the Leopard head(London Assay) the Lion Passant(Sterling) Capital O in an upside shield(1909-1910) and the maker's mark CD. The inside also has an elastic band to hold the cigarettes in place. The box has a low and very slick looking profile. It could probably be used as a card case if you would like. Twin matching pairs of silver. Plain cauldron style salts. Made in 1740 by David Hennell. David Hennell I(1712- 1785) was apprenticed to Edward Wood in 1728. Became free 1735 and entered his first mark 1736. He was the founder of the Hennell-Silversmith-Dynasty. This is a typical example of the plain bowl style with three legs in remarkable condition. The marks on one of the pair are barely visible due to polishing. This set may have been a wedding gift as the owners monogram is clearly marked(M over TM) The engraving of a monogram in this style is typical of the period and manufacturer. No glass liners. For kids it would probably fit a size 3 to 3 1/2- measuring is always helpful. They measure: 8 3/4" long and just short of 3" wide on the OUTER sole. The boards covered in medium teal cloth with titles blind stamped in gold on the spine and cover plus metallic gold page tops. Additionally there is a pasted on portrait of the Snark that was eliminated from most subsequent printings. There is a small red mark on the front corner at the head of the spine and a couple light ink smudges on the rear board. The cover print and surfaces are modestly rubbed with light creasing at the ends of the spine and wear to the points. But no worn through areas, ... moreno tears or fraying and no significant bumps or fading. The book has been fitted with a Protective Dust Jacket of clear Mylar to help preserve it in the future. The interior reveals firmly bound contents with no loose or misaligned pages. Original end papers. Age toning is noted consistent with the date of publication but no particular foxing, There is a brief previous owner dedication written in pencil in the upper portion of the fly page that includes“ Xmas 1911” and the recipient’s name is repeated neatly at the upper edge of the fly. J, Wilkinson at the Royal Staffordshire Pottery Search This is a very nice souvenir plate showing a ring of London scenes done in a black transfer and a very nice rendition of St. Paul's Cathedral done in black then carefully hand colored. It is made by the pottery of A. J. Wilkinson at the Royal Staffordshire Pottery in Burslem. England. The mark shows St. George and the patriotic phrase, There'll always be an England. Based on the design technique, the form and the type of mark, I would have estimated that this piece was definitely made around 1900. However, all sources indicate that the patriotic thought is based on a poem written in 1939. Back to school for me! Still this is a wonderful piece of mid-century Staffordshire. 1832 SDUK: Map of the Environs of London
Fine. Original, steel-engraved map of the environs of London, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Society's Atlas in 1844, in London, by Chapman and Hall. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. Walker worked closely with Beaufort in engraving the maps. The idea for the town plans, of which the SDUK published many dozens, was that of W. B. Clarke, an architect, who became an enthusiastic advocate for the plans, and who executed ... moremost of them himself, often on the basis of personal on-site observations. The plans are highly decorative, and often have accompanying vignettes, or sketches of the main buildings. Finely engraved, the plans set a standard of excellence for commercial map-makers in England for decades to come. Dimensions 16 1/4" x 13 1/2" overall. Minor browning to edges, clean edge tears to the upper left and right, otherwise excellent condition.
