Wyld's New Plan of London. A very detailed street map of London extending to Holland Park in the West. N. Brixton in the South, West Ham in the East, and North to Kentish Town and Dalston. A most attractive Plan with ornamented borders and 11 vignettes: Buckingham Palace, British Museum, National Gallery, Houses of Parliament, St Pauls, Her Majesty's Theatre, General Post Office, the Bank of England, London Bridge, and two more of special interest- the Crystal Palace and"Mr Wyld's Model of the Earth in Leicester Square" These latter two were erected for the Great Exhibition, and the title on the covers of this map is"Wyld's Map of London and Visitor's Guide to the Great Exhibition 1851. Crystal Palace is shown in the southern section of Hyde Park. The title is also in French and German. Making it more attractive ... moreto Foreign visitors. The map has been professionally restored(see detailed condition report) And so is in a lovely condition, still with the original handcolouring. It would look wonderful in a frame, but at the moment has retained its status as a folding map in original covers. Size: The map is approx. 94.5cms x 55.5cms. It folds down to 15cms x 11.5cms. Condition: The map has been professionally restored so it is in a very fine condition. Mounted on thin tissue. The tissue is a little bulkier than the original linen so the original covers have been rebacked with an enlarged cloth spine so that it folds as before. 1873 Huge Ordnance Survey Map Kent Sussex Old Antique 1st Series Slipcase London
A huge map of Kent with parts of Sussex and Essex. It measures 193cms x 131cms when unfolded- I had to stand on a chair to take the photo of the whole! It folds down to 22cms x 14cms. It is a compilation of at least 2 first series Ordnance Survey maps. Kent was the first county to be published by the Ordnance Survey in 1801. At this time the maps were issued county by county. By the time this map was issued the Ordnance Survey was ignoring county boundaries and issuing sections based on nationwide divisions. In addition the county was re-surveyed at 6" to 1 mile. But this is a 1" to 1 mile map. There are 2 dates on the map, the eastern section being"produced from an electrotype taken in 1871. Price 2/6d" while the middle section was"electrotyped in 1873. Price 2/6d. The maps fit well together giving a seamless image ... moreof the county(though of course with the fold seams! It shows a detailed section of East London. And as well as showing the lower part of Essex, goes well down into Sussex(Heathfield etc. But clearly the main purpose of the map is to show the whole of Kent. It contains all the lovely features of early Ordnance Survey maps, not least the hachuring(not contours) of the hills which stand out well on this vast image. Condition: This map is in good condition for so huge an item. There is a small hole at a fold to the east of Dover. Out in the sea so not affecting the map details(see photo) Otherwise the folds are holding well(it is mounted on linen)The map in quite browned in places, but totally readable. The slipcase is marked and bumped, with no label, but functioning well. An unusual map in nice original condition. Free postage within the UK. I will send worldwide.
