Opening out to 63.5cms x 46cms. Condition: A folding map mounted on linen. Some wear at the folds. With splits(a noticeable one in the centre) and small holes at the meeting points. Discoloured and a little stained, but with lovely original colour. Very stained on the back with old ink numbers, but none of this affecting the front. So an old item with some wear, but it would look splendid if, for example, framed as it is. Sold without a slipcase. I will post worldwide. Starting at the ridiculous 0.99p. Hackney, London – Antique Segmented Map, Late 19th Century (I think)
A very detailed Edward Stanford map of the area. Undated. But my view is that it’s late nineteenth century; the reason being I believe the boundary shown on the map is the old parliamentary constituency as it existed from 1868 to 1885. The basis for the map is the six-inch to a mile map of London first published by Stanford’s in 1872, but this map has definitely been updated from then. The reason for the map is to show the locations of schools. Against the hugely detailed street plan. Condition is very good. The sheet measures approx 59cm x 70cm. And the paper map has been dissected into 12 segments(right hand segments very narrow) and mounted on linen, as originally issued. The map itself is evenly toned and remains clean and very fresh in appearance. The linen showing through is slightly dust soiled along the bits exposed when folded, with ... morealso the paper along the bottom horizontal fold a littled browned) but overall very good and without holes. On the verso lightly tanned and a very small amount of bubbling- but overall very clean and flat and there is marbled paper on the folded end segments with minor handling marks. ANTIQUE MAP OF BERMUDA AND ST. KITTS. This map was published by Emmanuel Bowen(1693-1767) in London in 1747. The complete sheet measures 16X19 inches. With the plate being 13.9X17 inches. The condition is very good. It has old paper reinforcements done long ago. Picture 6 shows part of it lifting, but really not effecting anything, best left alone. Picture 7-8 shows reinforcements at top and bottom, again, done long ago. Again, these are not uncommon, and for me, add to the great character this map has. The coloring is great, I've researched this map on the internet, and it retails for $1200-$1800, and this is in comparable condition. It's a beauty.

ANTIQUE RARE but damaged London Admiralty cloth map of Portugal, dated 1869
We were sorting through our late uncle's belongings after his death. We found lots of postcard albums dating to the early 1900s. Amazingly. One of the albums had been covered by what appeared to be hard cloth paper to protect it. When we took the cover off. It turned out to be a London Admiralty cloth map of Portugal"published at the Admiralty, November 18th, 1869" We were going to chuck it in the bin until we realised how old it was! The map is obviously very rare but it shows damage and folds. Two little chunks have been taken out left and right to accommodate the spine of the postcard album and the map has been trimmed along the right border. Who in their right mind would use a precious antique map like this to cover a postcard album? Even so. Even in its present condition, we are sure it could be framed and preserved. Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) founded the Bleau publishing company which dominated the mapmaking industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan(Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive. Atlas Novus" which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635- 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year.
