Up for auction a Old London map of St. Paul's cathedral(original) plans 1700's? This is a old plans of st Paul's Cathedral. It's hand drawn. Lettered and coloured and some added written plans on that was added later. It's on tracing paper that has been put on a hard-ish cloth like sheet.I'm guessing at a later date to preserve it longer. I measured just the original tracing paper, it's 1030mm long by 630mm width(This is not a copy or print) I am NO expert in old maps and plans. So I hope the photos are ok and you can see what you need to. It's in good condition, it is dirty from years of dust but only at one end as you can see in the photos. The map has a paper wrapping that protected It,it was rolled up and the dust just fell thought the gap in the middle of the tube of the map. Two little rips.One in the ... moretop right of the map,the other is middle left on the edge, as you can see in the photos. I haven't tried to clean this and will leave it up to the buyer to do so. I'm not sure how old this is but When I got this I got some other maps with it, I've got one of London meat market and North side of the embankment on The Thames river which is dated A.D. MDCCLXVII(1767) in the reign of King George the third. And some other ones. So I'm only getting my dates from the other maps. guessing this is just as old as they are or older. Extremely well detailed and legible, which is the hallmark of Cary's maps. This is the second edition. First edition was in 1787) Credit to Carey in the plate. Original colour to borders and to wooded areas. Scale of statute miles. Lovely textured paper(feels like the equivalent of 300gsm) Reverse is blank. Unframed. Overall max size = 274mm wide x 349mm(Actual map = 252mm x 312mm. Includes Latitude& Longitude) PERFECT condition. NO FOXING Background John Cary worked from London as a mapmaker. Engraver and publisher, towards the last quarter of the 18th century up to around 1830. Cary’s New and Correct English Atlas, first published around 1776 set out his stall as a serious mapmaker, ... morefocussing less on the decorative work of previous generations, and more on accuracy, quality and detail. Cary’s observations of what was required of maps at the time was astute and telling. Reflecting the changing socio-political times of the changing century. With heavy industry around the corner, transport needs and the resulting communications were rapidly progressing beyond the established mapping. To showcase his newly communications-embellished county maps, he took on from Robert Morden, publishing in the already established atlas, Camden’s Britannia in 1789. Soon after this success. Cary was commissioned by the General Post Office to measure the mail-coach roads, again, adding to his knowledge and practical precision in his work. He then worked for some years for the Ordinance Survey, using some of the same material he used for Camden's. Ever efficient, he used the same plates for his own large atlas, Cary's New Universal Atlas which he published first in 1808 and subsequently for another 7 issues, the last two after his death. 1762 Thomas Bowen Map Middlesex London Scarce Royal Atlas Old Antique Genuine
An Accurate Map of the County of Middlesex Drawn from Surveys; Adorned with a View of St. Paul's Cathedral. And Illustrated with Historical Extracts and other useful Improvements, by Thomas Bowen. A detailed map of Middlesex with an attractive cartouche, a vignette of St Paul's, and fascinating historical annotations. All very much in the style of"The Large English Atlas" issued by his father Emmanuel Bowen, but this is from the much scarcer"Royal Atlas" first issued in 1762 with editions to 1828. The imprint along the bottom(Parker, Bowles, Carrington Bowles, Ryall, Sayer, Kitchin, Overton) suggests that this is an early edition. The detail on this map is superb. And of particular interest as it depicts what is now much of Greater London. At this time places like Chelsea, Hampstead, and Bow were still villages ... moreseparated from the actual City which is here clearly marked. I notice a little hamlet called"Hithero" The map is as issued with original outline colouring. Now slightly faded. Size: Sheet is 59cms x 47cms approx. The printed borders are 49.5cms x 41cms approx. Condition: The image is in very good condition. With only a very little foxing here and there. There are 2 tiny holes which I can see only when the map is held up to the light. Remains of original outline handcolouring. The margins are tatty, with tears and loss and evidence of a previous mount. This map would look splendid if remounted and framed. Postage free worldwide.
