Creighton and engraved by J.C. Walker as stated in small print in the bottom margin. It is from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of England. Also stated in the bottom margin. Published in London by Lewis& Co. 1831, a copy fo the volume IV title page is included. Overall a very nice map in great condition that would frame up nicely, printed on heavy paper with the copper plate marks embossed around the margins and blank on the reverse. The map is not matted nor framed, being sold as a single individual sheet as shown in the pic. Size: The map image area measures 7 by 9 inches on a 9 1/2 by 12 1/2" page with a wide margin all around. Condition: The print is in Very Good or better condition for its age. Blank on the reverse, in its original uncolored state as issued, basically as seen in the pic. Other than a couple of very minor spots around the margins, it is very clean on a bright page that would frame up nicely. The paper is an off white buff with only some light tonal aging mainly around the edges. See the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual print. Antique plan of part of central London, south of the River Thames(A MAP OF THE SURREY SIDE OF THE THAMES FROM WESTMINISTER BRIDGE) The map dates from c1766(from the London Magazine) showing the layout of proposed routes for Blackfriars' Road to Blackfriars' Bridge. The mile long road was eventually completed in the last quarter of the 18th century. The map is unframed and uncoloured. It measures 200x260mm and among notable features are Lambeth Palace. Blackfriars' Bridge and the King's Bench Prison. The map has some slight age toning and offsetting(there is a mirror image of a page from the London/Gentleman's Magazine verso) The top of the map appears to have been trimmed with loss of border. It is a map by Braun& Hogenberg's. published in Janssen;s Illustorem Principumque Urbium Septentrionalium Europae. Cartographer Braun. Georg& Hogenberg, Frans. Tudor arms feature top right, with city arms top left with descriptive notes to the bottom left and right. The map is similar in details to the"copperplate map" the earliest printed map of London of which no complete copy survives.Merchant ships, cranes, mills,bull and bear baiting pits, the large tennis courts at Westminster and the stags in St. James are examples of London's business and leisure activities. This linen-backed map is still quit strong and in one piece. Paper has split along a lot of the fold creases down to the linen(not dis-similar to a sectionally layed map) There is wear to some corner creases- these defects haven't resulted in much informational loss. Minor foxing mostly to the margins. Grubby reverse. That's the bad bits out of the way. we are left with a large rare antique map showing London at the out-break of World War 1. The front cover is stamped with the seal of the House of Commons Library- showing the portcullis, so one can assume this is where the map spent most of it's life. This was Telford's famous proposal for the new London Bridge using the very latest developments in cast iron construction. Although under serious consideration for several years the plan was sadly turned down on the grounds of the unproven nature of the new technology. The plan includes individual buildings and many streets are named. Covers from Chatham Place and Blackfriars Bridge in the west to the Tower of London in the east. It would make an absorbing comparison with the present day street layout and is a fascinating record of a rapidly changing London at the turn of the 18th century. Very scarce. Fine condition. 1904 Philips Handy Street Atlas London Old Antique Book Map 65 Plates Disbound
Philip's Handy-Volume Atlas of London. A Series of Fifty-Five Sectional Maps(on a Scale of Three Inches to the Mile) of the County of London. With Fourteen Special Maps and Plans.Fourth Edition, Revised and Enlarged.George Philip Son, Ltd. 1904. A lovely early Street Atlas of London in a sadly disbound state. As far as I can see only pages 1- 5 of the Directory are missing. And certainly all the plates are there. Each plate fills a double sheet, the other sides being blank except for the title. In other words, each plate(and they are all loose) stands on its own. They are very attractive, with early colour printing, and as well as the street plans, there are interesting maps such as a Geological map, a Railway map, a lovely birds-eye view of the City, a plan of Kew Gardens and the Zoo, etc. Condition: This attractive Atlas is completely ... moredisbound. Front and back(leather) boards loose, and spine missing. Endpapers present, so too the title page and 2 plans(St Pauls and Westminster Abbey) Pages 1- 5 of the London Directory appear to be missing, otherwise I think it is complete. Certainly the attractive street maps, 1- 65(in fact 67 plates in all including 57a and the Index map) are all present. The maps are all in a clean condition, though map 24(the City) has split down the middle. So although in poor condition as a whole. This is an Atlas well worth saving in some form or other. I shall start this at 0.99 and see what the market thinks it is worth. I think it is worth a lot more than that! I will send worldwide. £13.00 to the USA etc. Less to Europe.
