Conditions are as you can see in the images. Mapmaker: Gerard Mercator(1512- 1594) is a seminal figure in the history of cartography. Mercator's calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy model. Many of his systems of measurement. Such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments. He did not construct his first map until 1540, when he made two maps, one of Flanders and another of Palestine. These two impressive works earned him the patronage of the Emperor Charles V, for whom he construed a globe and several large scale maps. Despite this imperial patronage, Mercator was accused of heresy and in 1552 fled to Duisburg. In Duisburg he set himself up as a cartographer and began work on his revised edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. This three volume work was the first book to be called an"Atlas" after the Titan and King of Mauritania. Following Mercator's death his descendants took over his firm but languished because of heavy competition from the Ortelius firm. It was not until Mercator's plates were purchased and republished( Mercator/ Hondius) by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson that Mercator's position as the preeminent cartographer of the age was re-established. Ducatus Slesvicensis 56 x 48 cm copperplate engraving. 60 x 53 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Nürnberg, circa 1720 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Schleswig-Holstein and southern Denmark by Johann Baptist Homann(1663-1724) Founder of the leading German map publishing firm of the 18th century. Homann was a master engraver but not a true cartographer despite his eventual appointment as Imperial Geographer- the cartography of his maps was unoriginal and based almost entirely on the work of other geographers although his maps often outshine the original source map in engraving work and decorative elements. This map is a case in point- it is a beautifully engraved and highly decorative close copy of a circa 1680 map by the Dutch mapmaker Frederik De Wit(1630-1706) While Homann copied the cartography of De Wit's ... moremap exactly. His assertive engraving style and typically bold colour makes for an arguably more visually impressive map. The map extends from Kolding to Kiel and includes the North Frisian islands with the west coast littoral waters showing a stippled lattice of sandbars. This well-preserved example of the map is a strong early impression and will make a superb presentation if matted and framed. The cartouche is unusually rustic. Showing peasants with bread and cheese- note cornucopia of root vegetables: Turning to the map itself. We find a dense presentation of place names- to get a sense of detail consider that the distance from Schleswig to Flensburg as seen below measures just 9 cm actual size: Note sandbars: Haderslev and environs: Condition- Please note carefully: M ap is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained from photos. Strong impression with distinct platemark, original hand colour bold and vivid. Map exhibits some soiling along top border as can be seen in photo, nothing significant, and centrefold is somewhat pronounced with some"rollover" Top margin has been expertly replaced with closely matching old paper just beyond upper neatline.
