This law book seems to have been the property of the Town Clerk of Richmond. This book contains new laws passed in the November session including: laws on railroad corporations, state tax, school districts, a few amendments, as well as commuting the sentence of death on a prisoner. This book has almost a complete tear on the front cover which someone repaired with a small piece of tape inside, contains foxing marks on pages throughout the book and there is a gouge in the back page that continues to page 210. Dug in the vicinity of Cold Harbor. Virginia, this is a New Hampshire state seal cuff button. It still retains some of its' original gold gilting, and has a straight shank. I cannot discern the entire backmark, but I can definitely make out"EXTRA" and what I believe to be the beginning of"SCOVILL. Nevertheless, it is definitely a Civil War button. It is a solid little button overall, and displays nicely. Cold Harbor was the site of two fierce battles, one in 1862, and the latter in 1864. Civil War. GAR. Connecticut, NY, N. Hampshire. Amoskeag. 6 Misc Ribbons, 1880's
Offered is a small miscellaneous group of ribbons. Most related to the GAR, but NOT all. They run the gamut from 1887 to 1895. SEE SCANS. The first and second scans show two ribbons-in-one where two GAR posts got together in 1889. These two ribbons are attached. The third scan shows four ribbons, all GAR but for the one in the lower left for the 1st Connecticut Governor's Foot Guard meeting in Atlanta in 1895. This must have been a general meeting of some sort involving other states- it's not likely Connecticut alone would travel to Georgia. And the final scan is for the meeting of the Amoskeag Veterans in Hartford in 1894. So far as we know tis was in no way administratively linked with the GAR, but was a New Hampshire organization established in 1854 for the purpose of participating in military parades and other veteran-related ... moremilitary activities- veterans' rallies, dances, and so forth. You did not have to be an actual veteran to belong to this group, and they did participate in military meetings and rallies beyond the NH borders. After the Civil War the Amoskeag Veterans, though an independent organization, worked closely with the GAR, particularly in gathering funds for the various monuments one finds in almost every town. The ribbon in the first scan measures 2 1/2 x 8, and is in at least fair condition only, the chief flaw being at the lower right edge. The smallest item is but 1 1/2 x 3 1/2, lower left in the third scan. The Amoskeag ribbon measures 2 1/2 x 6 1/4, and is in good condition as is the the coated tin eagle clasp at the top.
