Up for bids this week is Of MEN and BATTLE. An illustrated story of the attack on Japanese forces at Arawe, New Britain in December, 1943. The landing at Arawe was a diversionary action prior to Allied troops landing at Cape Gloucester during Operation Cartwheel. This book’s central focus are the sketches of David Fredenthal portraying the tension. Fear, and emotional strain of men in combat. Richard Wilcox provides the textual supplement to the sketches. Fredenthal’s sketches were done prior and during the landings at Arawe. This is a first edition published by Howell and Soskin in 1944. The 126 page oblong volume contains over 50 of Fredenthal sketches. Overall condition of the book is very good to very good plus. There is a gift inscription and ex-libris label on the inside cover.
